Hey guys Im investing in a Lexa 400 for bucktails and looking for a good Bucktail rod. Went to cabelas in saginaw and the guy was trying to sell me a medium action bass rod. I know I'm new but that didn't seem right. Any recommendations? I would like to stay under $150.

What size bucktails? 10's or smaller/spring bucktails? If you are throwing bigger bucktails then you will most likely want a heavy action rod with a fast action tip. The LT Big Nasty is an amazing rod for big bucktails but it is pretty pricey. Musky Mojo line-up is good too and should have a rod for big bucktails. If you are throwing smaller bucktails then a MH/Medium action rod will be really good. You might want to look into the Musky Innovations Predator series as those are under $100.00. I'd probably go with their 8'6" Heavy action for big bucktails or the 8'6" MH for smaller stuff.

Thanks jason. This will be for 10's and larger. I only have a couple 12's. My Lexa 300 can handle my 8's no problem

I really like the Okuma EVX 9'3" XH telescoping rod for bigger bucktails. It's a inexpensive rod with a great warranty and handles blades nicely. Don't let that XH rod rating fool you it's definitely lighter than what most people would consider a XH.

Good point on the rod ratings- I don't think there is any standard or consistency from brand to brand. A better bet is to look at the lure weight ratings for each rod.

Personally I am a bargain basement $ guy when it comes to musky rods. My opinion is I don't need anything 'nice' for musky casting, just needs to not break when I beat on them mercilessly and I've had good luck even with cheaper rods. I have an Okuma rod that's been great. I even broke it- my fault- after using it for like 4 years and they still replaced it for the cost of shipping or something crazy cheap. I second the Okuma!

9' chaos shock & awe
I believe they are around $180 but well worth it. Rick stands behind his products should you ever have an issue. I don't use any rods under 9' as t makes big figure 8's much easier and you have more leverage for casting. I've also had 9' Tackle Industries XXH and they have been great too. They are less expensive than the chaos rods but have lower quality line guides.
