Some rumors got passed on to me recently and I wanted to pass along the facts about these.
1. Diane is no longer going to be the backup broodstock lake and the new GLMUS broodstock lake will be Hudson.
This is true, based on the past netting for broodstock in Hudson it was determined that it would be a better fit than Diane.
2. To help the survival of GLMUS in Thornapple and Hudson the existing adult NMUS will be trapped and transferred to other waters.
This is also true.
This really bites for me. Hard. At least for awhile.
It's hard enough to catch a muskie in Thorn without them taking all the big ones out. I've only ever seen one or two spotties there. And I hope they don't have a lot of mortalities moving the big fish around. Slim chance they'll stock another lake near me.
So now my nearby choices are: Thorn, where it's going to get even harder than usual, and Ovid where chances are slim to none, more often than not. Will they ever fix the Ovid dam issue? My guess is they'll never stock it again, instead.
Not loving it. I had hoped the GLS stocking would make things better for me. I should have known better.
Wherever they go they should keep it a secret. Those fish haven't had to dodge spears yet. It would make sense to keep those fish within a reasonable distance to thorn so current stakeholders can have the same opportunity at those same fish while allowing some relief of angling pressure on the gls population
GEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! I always thought I was in charge of rumor control. I guess I'll play 20 questions.
1. I new Hudson was the best spot, so why the change of heart?
2. Taking the others out, just crazy!! Are they afraid of them doing the wild thing? The carp come in and wipe everything out after and if they do spawn. They already put GLM in Diane, aren't they worried about that?
3. The new fingerlings I guess will be tagged How big will they be? How many put in?
4. How long does it take for them to get into the 30's. I'll be older than dirt!! Can you guy's prop me up in the boat [smilie=grandpa.gif]
5. Like someone said where are they moving them to and do people like me get a shot. How do you keep this quite and protect from the idiots that think they caught a big pike??
Some suggestions, I've fished that lake for 20 to 25 years. It has a overflow, with a creek that that heads down towards Adrain, but I've followed it during late spring and summer and it's only a foot wide and maybe 3" deep.
I know they have done this in WI. make a spawning area for them. Whatever weeds are best for spawning like cabbage or what they need. Maybe adding gravel or sand. Hell Will you know more about this than I do!!
I don't know what else to say, when do they start this trapping? I forgot will it finally get a 50" size limit. How will they get the word out on this, I guess the fishing regs and some big AZZ signs at Hudson for the morons, forgot they can't read!!!!!
Just thinking out loud here, but I doubt they will be able to catch every single NS in Thorn for transport so there should still be some population in there to target. It definitely stinks as it could put Thorn back 5-10 years in regard to big fish though. On the positive note, it sounds like there could be an instantaneous good lake for people to target from the Thorn transplants (depending on where the fish are transported to).
This is hard for club members that don't live in the Grand Rapids and Battle Creek area. I live in between Diane and Hudson. Hudson a already hard fishery will be on the back burner for a few years if they take every northern strain out. Diane is also a hard lake to fish. The lake association kills the weeds on Diane 2-3 times per year which does not help the fishing out at all. This may have been some of the reason that Diane was scrapped. It would be nice if the muskies they take out of Hudson stay local to the southern area to give us guys down here another option. But we will see. Looks like I'm traveling more to Indiana or west Michigan to fish next year.

Sounds like the local techs didn't want to learn how to net at Diane. There is also no need to maintain Hudson as NMUS broodstock.
2. Taking the others out, just crazy!! Are they afraid of them doing the wild thing? The carp come in and wipe everything out after and if they do spawn. They already put GLM in Diane, aren't they worried about that?
This has nothing to do with spawning, they want the GLMUS to have a fresh start and no competition or predation.
3. The new fingerlings I guess will be tagged How big will they be? How many put in?
From here on the broodstock lakes will be stocked with yearlings and not fall fingerlings, yearlings will be stocked sometime around June and should be between 12 and 15"+
4. How long does it take for them to get into the 30's. I'll be older than dirt!! Can you guy's prop me up in the boat [smilie=grandpa.gif]
The female GLMUS in Thornapple have reached 40" in about 4 years.
5. Like someone said where are they moving them to and do people like me get a shot. How do you keep this quite and protect from the idiots that think they caught a big pike??
The plan is to create a new fishery, the Erie basin biologists are identifying waters where the fish can be moved.

Fish that escape are lost fish, there's no reason to spend money trying to create somewhere for them to spawn when they're just going to continue downstream.

Trapping will be done in spring during spawning season since that's the easiest time to catch most of the fish.
