Looking to do some jigging this fall when it gets too cold to cast and had some questions about the bondy bait. For those of you who use the bait, do you upgrade the hooks to a larger size? I have heard they have some trouble holding fish and the hooks look very small for the bait so I would most likely put larger hooks on there. Also, would anyone suggest alternate baits for jigging or is the bondy bait the 'go to' lure. I know fuzzy duzzits are very good, but I was maybe thinking about using a heavy Red October tube as the lack of plastic might up the hooking percentages.
Tubes aren't a good choice for vert jigging, they work in a river situation if you're dragging them though. Cast and jig – yes, just not the best option for vert.
Fuzzy's work and are about twice as difficult to fish as a Bondy but fish eat them and they hook very well.
The Bondy is a terrible hooking bait in a lake situation unless you change the hook arrangement. It's a little better in a river, because they sometimes eat it from the side, but still not great. The reason is that fish eat them on the fall, taking the bait head first. This puts the bait plus 4-6" of leader in the mouth of the fish which will pry the mouth of the fish open on the hookset. This often results in the fish getting hooked under the jaw (outside the mouth) w/ the rear hook and/or not getting hooks at all. What has worked for me is to move the front hook from the bottom to the top of the bait and go up one hook size. This usually results in the fish getting the front hook in the corner of their mouth.
One of these years I'll get around to designing and building a good soft plastic for vert jigging. I know how it needs to be built I just need to do it…
Take the pearl, I am 2 for 2 on Murray with mine. I had a chance to talk with John Bondy on the Detriot river and he gave us some tips on how to use them. Geoff caught his Musky at the Bruce on a Bondy bait. There are different ways to work the bait like Charlie mentioned too. Maybe the hooks could be rearranged, I dunno, but they def like to hit the front of the lure.
