Looking to upgrade boats as mine is simply too small, but was thinking about simply changing mine into a tiller to open up space. How many of you guys have done that? Did you do it yourself or bring it into a shop? About how long and expensive was it? And did you have to get new registration and insurance?

My 16ft. Lund SSV was a console boat when I got it. It was made into one by the previous owner. An SSV is just an oversized rowboat, so it was easy for me to do it myself. No difference for registration and I don't think no difference for insurance either. The job shouldn't be too hard to do.

As long as you can find the tiller handle for your motor it shouldn't be a problem. For sure no change in insurance or registration. Consider the weight change though, if there is anything you can move forward when you move yourself back it will help.

I'm always 'looking' for a new boat, but that's not realistic for another 5+ years probably due to lack of funds lol. Figured if I can just change my boat over to a tiller it would be a win/win as it would open up space, save me money, and obviously my boat has sentimental value.

If you do turn it into a tiller, pick up a "hydrofoil" for your motor. Since you will have more weight in the rear it will help you get on plane a lot faster.

Shoot me a PM for details, the conversion to tiller wasn't all that hard, time depends on the extent of the transformation / boat layout. I had a lot of fun with mine……several websites out there for ideas, help / questions, and reference. <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

My etec was not a tiller and the marina added it. I am guessing you can drill out the rivet heads for your console, either use soft or over size marine grade rivets with sealant to fill rivet holes after the console removal.

Michelle and I have fished from a 14 foot tiller for years now. You also fished from this little boat. Are you trying to get three in your Boat? If not you wont really get much more space by removing a side console. W e fished three out of our boat with Jim on one of the Lower Thornapple impoundments and it was too crowded for safe casting. How long is your boat?

9' rods and lanky arms definitely helps put some fish in the net at boatside 🙂

Yea, trying to get another person in the boat for either fishing or even just sitting and relaxing. My boat is 16.5' long so it would open up a little more space. Our family friend has the exact same boat but in the tiller model and we fish three out of it a fair amount. I'm just worried about rearranging all the electronics and wiring systems if I do change it over.

Everything I ran into on the console was bundled with quick connect plugs.
