Been fishing by myself a lot lately and it brings up the question, How do you approach boat control differently when fishing with 1 2 or 3 people in the boat?

When I am fishing by myself I tend to fish a little closer to structure as I can cast straight towards it or at an angle down the structure. With two people in the boat I try to control the boat from the back and will try to hold the boat a little deeper and point the front of the boat away from structure a little bit. This allows both people to get lots of space to cast the structure. It is very frustrating to a person in the back when the guy in front just points of front of the boat at the structure as the back guy gets cut off from good water. It is also important to make sure you have a good partner to fish with that knows how to cast at a forward angle so he or she doesn't cut off your fishing area. Also make sure to cast at alternating times so both anglers aren't figure 8'ing at the same time. Here is a quick drawing I just made. The red is my casting angles alone and the blue is with another person.

Also, if fishing with 3 or more people make sure you have proper lure selections for positions in the boat. I like to have a deep lure (usually dawg or DDD) up front to cast parallel with the structure, a medium diving lure in the middle to throw a little over the structure, and then a shallow bait (bucktail or topwater) in the back to throw mostly over the structure – that is if you don't know where the fish are and are searching for them.

I notice a lot of guys get super close to structure when fishing by themselves, is there any advantage to getting super close and casting almost parallel with the break/structure or is it better to stay out away and let your lures start inside and pull out over the break to open water?

Thanks Jason that helps a lot, I definitely think it will help me to fish more effectively than I have been.

sitting right on top of a weed edge or structure is sometimes a good way to trigger strikes, than just casting to it.

Really depends on the fish and what they want that particular day.

Ive sat on top of a weed flat and casted out and reeled back towards the flat and caught fish. Sometimes you just have to try different stuff

I still like to stay off the structure a little bit when fishing alone as there can be wandering fish off of the structure. Lots of the fish will be right on the break or weed edge, but there will be some fish 10-20' off the break or weed edge so I try to always get some lure time over open water. Like swanezy said, you will have to try different things. Sometimes the best option is to jig right on the break, sometimes you need to cast up over the structure, etc. It depends on what lake you fish as well. If I'm fishing a new lake I definitely want to have multiple people casting different baits (one deep, one medium, one shallow) just to cover water and see where the fish are.

I concur with everything Jason and Swanzey have said. Cool
It definately makes a big difference on how far back you boat is from some structure. I am constantly switching it up. Some days, I'm out from the weedline a ways, because the fish are too. Maybe suspended 10-20' out from it. Other times, I've parked right over top of the weedlind and casted a Dawg or DDD and just dragged the edge and caught fish. And yet again like Jon said, park on top of the weeds and cast out over open water. Sometimes, the different angle that a lure is presented is enough to make a fish eat.

Good stuff here, I like the strategies Jason covers. I fish alone quite a bit, often in close to get those parallel casts with maybe more time in the zone, but agree that it's not always best and you have to move out some too. It can also make it tough on partners when you go with one and don't adjust to give him better casting. I try to do that but don't always succeed depending on winds etc.

One point to add though, is that when someone takes you it's just a great change of pace to not be responsible for boat control and enjoy whatever presents itself, including casting backward if you need to, or off the other side of the boat toward open water, whatever. Many times that pays off more than being in front getting what otherwise seems like the best angles. Another possibility is getting in shallow and both throwing out deeper and back in toward the break and on into the shallows, a change of the usual direction to the fish and it more readily gives both casters plenty of opportunity.
