Chad,
I fished with Jayme once up there 4-5 years ago. He knows the lake. I tried to organize an MMA outing a couple Falls ago on the Forum with the offer of an informational session first with Jayme at the pavillion in the park. There was zero member response on the Forum. I would be interested in such an outing if one were to materialize.
Will is exactly right about the "culture" of most of the locals up there. The local bar across from the park promotes and sells plans for building a spearing shanty (even during the summer). When I mentioned to the bar tender the fact that the sturgeon population there was now in shambles, soon to be followed by their muskie, from years of spearing, he walked away and didn't serve me another beer. So, I left.
If you need Jayme's number, let me know.

It's not about the spear, it's about trust. Put yourself in that position and tell me how willing you would be to share info with Joe Random that asks you to PM him some info.

The correct spelling is actually Jayme Warwick
So a member can't ask other members for a little help within the "member discussion" area??? Having been in the club for 6 years and serving in a executive position the majority of the time, I wouldn't think I would fit the "Joe Random" profile.
If I have offended anyone who calls Black their home, please accept my apologies. For those of you who have helped; thanks.
I guess I just really don't understand…
Chad-
Its not an offend thing the guys in that area wont talk to anyone period. THey like spearing and as a darkhouse stronghold area MMA members are the devil. That is one of several areas up here and in the yoop where I have seen launch signs cut down and public launch areas purposely obscured to keep others out. Honestly Jayme is the only member I know of that has fished that for any significant time. [smilie=2c.gif]

Jayme has asked me on several occasions to come up and fish with him. I have not been able to get up there. Lots of water on those three big lakes lots of ramps and I am sure there are some big fish up there as there are all over this state. Its amazing what one finds when one looks
. Maybe we should all descend on those lakes for a week and give the Natives something to think about ha ha ha . Im going to hit every spear chuckers home waters before Im dead and make sure they know I released a fat one. Some day those dumb asses will come into the 21st century. Until then they have to move over and let me fish . They dont like it they can kiss my transom( backside of my boat). I fished for 7 days on the chain and saw no one but one other MMA member and a bass fisherman with his son. I stay away from the beer tards that run their mouths up there. If you go looking for spear chuckers you will eventually find one. Confronting these idiots in public is not the right way to proceed. Changing laws is done as Will has said many times by applying science. Spearing will eventually be banned on these lakes or replaced with a kill tag because its the best thing for the fishery not because of our passion or love for the fish. We waste our breath and anger these leftovers from the stone age when we talk of protection of the Musky. This state has come forward light years and even leads Wisconsin on several regulations such as our 42 inch size limit. They have spearing as well.
In MY OPINION the best way to go up there and fish is to just do it . Spend some money in a quiet little motel and stay out of the local beer hole. I have never had one problem fishing anywhere up there at all. I have good friends on Torch lake that own a motel right near the Clam river mouth. I have been going up there since 1997 fishing Muskies and even lived in eastport for a summer back in the 80's . Just go up and fish it, I am going to. Mike and Michelle

Thay was from Chuck, He is right there was no interest. I think if it were brought to the table again that would change. The only way the MMA can be an example of C.P.R. is to have locals see us doing it. After a while it catches on. People a easily led to newer and better ways of doing things. And the place to teach that is on the water not in the bar. By example not by preaching. By showing joy during the release and Photo. After that big spear kill on Black a couple years ago I lost interest in fishing it because I thought the system had been decimated. The reports I am hearing says otherwise. One person even told me the Black river was stacked with Muskies in the spring. I guess the only way to find out is do what we did on the Chain. Go up there and troll all of it. Look at the contours, Bait and weed growth make a game plan and execute. After 5 days trolling Black Mullet and Burt I would think a guy would have a pretty good assesment of those waters. Just the maps I have show me where I want to start.
In short I dont think these lakes are as picked clean as has been stated in the past. I discussed this with Larry Ramsell durind my three days sharing a booth with him in Chicago. Larry still fishes the Indian river system and the St Marys river every year. He thinks state record fish are swimming in everyone of the 5 biggest Northern Michigan Lakes. His exact words were there is no competition when I go there. I never see another Musy boat. So this tells me that I can sit here and cry about spears and a few guys who kill muskies or I can go up and enjoy these waters which in turn takes some of the pressure off of my local lakes.
I think the time has come to lay claim to these fisheries. To just start fishing them again. To spend money in the local campgrounds and Motels, resturants and tackle shops. We need to talk about the joys of releasing big Muskies without condemning the local killers. Show a kid a picture at the boat launch and when he says why didnt you keep it? you tell him Im going to come back next year and catch him again only next time he will be bigger. Be polite to everyone you meet and dont come off as an elitest or you will be rejected. Those lakes like all the other lakes are owned by us all. We need to lead by example and we need to make sure that this club is never portrayed again as a group of elitists by the likes of the next Fred Trost. Mike King
Here's some info I PM Chasin50 on Black.
The north end of the lake in the weedbeds is a hot spot for perch and walleye.
The Doriva Beach area and the area near the mouth of the Black River have some real nice cabbage weeds and grass weeds.
Locating green weeds is very important.
The depth drops from the 10- to 12-foot range into the 30-foot range quickly.
The best area for both musky and the large population of northern pike is on the north end of the lake.
This area is located where the Lower Black River empties out of the lake and where the Upper Black River enters.
This large bay has a slow tapering depth with a ton of cabbage weeds.
Their are big fish their but the only way to find them is to spend some time on the water their.

Jason,
I don't know who the current chairperson is for organizing the outings or if the schedule is etched in stone for 2008. When I discussed it with Jayme a year or two ago he knew of lodging we could access and was willing to give some general fishing guidelines for MMA members prior to the event if desired.
I'm willing to assist with any outing plans should the club want to try and organize this event for 2008 or 2009. I'm not sure if the State Park is open anymore (Onaway State Park). Someone told me it was closed for camping (not staffed anymore) due to Jenny's BIG cut back on services.
I could look into this further as to what the situation is up there. We could certainly have fun even with 3-5 boats showing up. There's something unique and "wild" about that locale and I wish I went there more often. I have never boated a muskie there, but have had good results with walleye and sm bass. The last time I was there, however, something did a number on my Bobbie bait. When looking at the lure afterward I noticed the distance or width of the teeth marks (jaw) on the lure was very wide. Unfortunately, the old adage of "when in doubt, set the hook" was not followed in this instance. I wish I had in this case!
Chuck,
Another option rather than trying to put together an outing would be to schedule an informal day(or two) to fish Black, post it on the site with a time and place to meet and exchange info. If you get a decent response, then by all means put an outing together for '09. This way you get a feeling for intrest level and do no waste a lot of time if it doesn't go.
Chad,
If you look at the club membership we are REALLLLY slim in members in that area. I do not think a lot of MMA members fish it much at all and those who have fished it have not had great success are the reasons you didn't get a whole lot of response.
