Well, now I just feel like a heel… Still upsetting, though.

He's been trying to catch a fish like that for a few years.

Very nice, no sense letting the gulls pick at it. It happens, I hope the mount looks good.

Congrats to the angler that caught her, awesome fish. It is very unfortunate that we were not able to learn more about the habits of this fish and those waters via the radio transmitter. I guess all we can hope for now is that our DNR will finally realize the true potential of those waters and maybe we will get some new rules and regulations to help protect those fish.

I do find it odd that the new phrase in the musky world is “I tried to release her, but she would not swim away”. Even more confusing is that people seem to think it is OK to kill a fish if you first tried to let her go. I guess I have never seen a fish not swim away if she was handled properly.

It's sad, but congrats to him and he even tried to get her going. It's better than her washing up on shore. Did they get the device back? Can they re-use it? Did they get some good info from her?

What if they really tried to release them and they died? What about when it happens to you? Maybe he didn't think it was OK to kill this fish, maybe she just died.

A few things come to mind…
1. This isn't just a fish, this is a BIG fish and dealing with them isn't like dealing with any other fish.
2. Fish that might come up from 30' of water to eat a lure 12' down that can't get back to depth (because they're hooked) will have an expanded swim bladder regardless of how they're handled. It doesn't take much for a muskie to want to belly up if their swim bladder expands.
3. Maybe this fish was hooked in a way that made it difficult to unhook and/or maybe there was some damage. I've had fish die in my net and how they were handled didn't make any difference.

WOW!!!! I don’t know if I can handle all of those “what if’s” and “maybe’s”. I guess it is always possible the “perfect storm” could have happened.

Thanks for the insight Will.

Sure, we have all have had fish that were tough to unhook. How many fish have you had die in your net? Since you like to tell everyone how many fish you catch, tell us how many have died in your net, we can all do the math and figure out how rare this really is.

The bottom line is if someone chooses to keep a fish of that size for whatever reason and it is a legal fish, then they have every right to do so. Unusual things happen while musky fishing and I agree it may have been an accident. Congrats to Kyle for catching a legitimate 50lb giant.

I was looking so forward to seeing the trail of that giant at the banquet. I was looking so forward to going up there on the 10th of October to fish for her.. Now I guess I have to hope there is another and there no doubt is . Ill not rejoice about it. Yea great catch and all, way to go ,good job . But finding out it was that fish really gives me a sick feeling in my gut. Its not anger at Kyle but at myself for not taking the time to go up and take my shot. Im angry that I didnt make an attempt thinking (how could anyone catch that fish?). THe odds? So against it. Well hats off to the young man. A moment of silence for the big girl. She proved one thing I already knew that they moved from one lake to another up there. Those big girls can be true roamers.

Will, I understand your concern that the club not be bitter. My fellow members lets not be bitter. Ill miss her and the expectations I had . I know you all hoped for a shot at her like I did. But hey ya cant catch them if you are not on the water. Maybe I get to the next one first. Gentlemen

Only the guy who caught her knows the real story,
regardless, she's a great fish. and hopefully will look good on the wall.
Hopefully this will open some eyes with the DNR and they see
the potential we have here and some changes to regulations are made.
In the end, it's not someones kid, it's just a fish…..One I wish I had caught but still just a fish.
