I gotta throw two pennies at this one… Say what you want about the length… 60 inches is a big number but the fish looks really long so who knows. I skimmed over the thread about this fish and was really bummed about what some of these ppl were saying about this fish. In fact, I was embarrassed for the ppl that made the comments about how he is holding the fish. Yeah, you prolly shouldn't hold a 60 incher vertical, we all know that. But, holy cow, the dude caught the fish accidentally and released it! Give the guy some credit for not 'having' to bring the fish home to parade it around town and for trying to practice some conservation. I am kind of a fanatic about good releases in my boat, but don't feel the need to rant and rave about how other ppl handle fish. I get really irritated when ppl have to spoil someone's accomplishment by bashing their fish handling skills. More ppl are releasing fish, and they are doing it the right way more often, than when I first started chasing muskies. I think we are gaining ground pretty well with the 'average' anglers out there on the how's and why's in releasing fish. We need to keep educating in tasteful ways or we will be labeled as elitist trophy fishermen and no one will really care to manage for better muskie fisheries bc they are so turned off by our sport.
I was talking about the thread, not the 60 inch debate… I'm a lil skeptical of the 60 inch measurement myself. The fish is really long, but 60 inches is a huge number to just throw out there. I'm just upset about the ppl on the thread jumping on the guy's case. Maybe the guy was thinking about getting into muskie fishing until all these guys ripped into him about releasing the fish wrong. The members area is a good place to talk about what length the fish is or what he could have done better in releasing the fish. Getting on this public thread and critiquing someone is just distasteful imo.
John I agree totally, sometimes i forget that some of us have been chatting so long that it is a given but even on here some newer people could get the wrong idea. I have seen some of the type of post you refer to that is why I really only chat on here. What he did was fantastic. to rip him for a hold?? not cool- but some people just gotta be idiots…
Kevin
Even though its a crappy hold, the old guy could probably barely pick the thing up, the fact that he was bass fishing and is not a musky fisherman, makes you wonder why would he lie about it being 60 inches? U think he actually knows what the record for the longest musky ever is? prob not. So if they measured it reasonably, whos to say it doesnt look 60 inches?
