I've never taken mine off. I used to have the pin with the lock on it, but lost that one a few years back. Even our work trucks with hitches that cost $100 keep em on and some of our guys live in sketchy neighborhoods.

I use one of these on my stainless steel hitch.

Everytime I unhook the boat the hitch comes off and it goes under the trailer. This is mostly because I've pulled a Bill Dance too many times to count! At least the next time I ram my shin/knee into a hitch it isn't going to be on my truck.

I got a keyed-alike pair: one that locks the ball assembly to the hitch, and one that locks the trailer latch, so the boat/trailer can't be removed from the car while unattended.

The only reason my stays on all the time is because I value my rear bumper. I've had it 2 or 3 times now someone rear-ended me hard enough to put a hole in their grill but not enough to do any damage to me. [smilie=hahaha.gif]

I see so many in parking lots with just the pin in place, same with those bicycle carriers. Next truck I may get an underbody put on. Tough choice wether to lock it in place or remove it. I have so many scars on my shins now, after 49 years of banging into things, wont make alot of difference if there are a few more bruises

Tom, that sounds like great stuff. Did you also get the component to lock the ball to the hitch at the same place? I could really use these two things you've mentioned.

John,
Got them both at the Meijer in Mason, in one bubble pack for about $30. They're made by Master and are all stainless steel. No, it does NOT include a lock for the ball nut.
