TYRONE TOWNSHIP — A black bear, apparently roused by thunder Wednesday, investigated a back yard on 21 Mile Road in Tyrone Township Wednesday. Kent County sheriff's Deputy Todd Frank, who responded to a call from the homeowner, said the bear checked out a bird feeder, a bird house and a mulberry tree. Frank spotted the bear in a field around 4 p.m. He said the male bear was about 350 pounds, and estimated it to be about 5 years old. Frank advises people in the area store pet food indoors and leave bird feeders empty until the bear moves on.
The bear was back at it again today. He really upset one of our fine county residents when she noticed him eating out of her trash can. He did her no harm, but sure did make a mess of her yard. He spooked when we arrived. This incident was in the early afternoon in long lake park. Bear appears to be heading south with the river/stream bottoms.
