To go along with the "seasons" thread…

Would you support changing the bag limit on muskellunge from one per day to one per season?

Wouldn't bother me, I have only kept one in 8 years and that was due to the fish dying, fortunately is was 42" so I didn't break any laws. Too bad we can't raise the size limit to 45" or more while we are at it.
That my opinion.

I think most if not all members of the MMA WOULD support this.
The problem is going to be with the average Joe on Sanford
who likes to catch muskies with bluegills/and the guys who
spend the winters in darkhouses….Is this another fight we can't win?
Is it worth the fight?

Not sure… just throwing it out there for discussion like the season thread.

Rest assured, we will never have another fight. From now on any proposed changes will come from the esocid committee. MMA will simply say they support/endorse any porposed changes, if indeed we do.

😀 I guess the word fight on my part was taken out of context. Wink
I guess I just don't see the committees endorsing something that
already makes us look more "trophy Hunter" than the public already views us. ❓
Would I love to see it? You better believe it!!!!

A muskellunge possession limit from one per day to one per season?

This would not effect me, but I would oppose the rule as a bit too extreme. Let me play devil advocate. True most of the MMA members could adapt without much problem because of their dedication and experience on safe CPR. The general public is a different case. Keeping the first fish is simple enough decision, but what happens with the unexpected fish accidents or bad hooking with bleeding gills that throw the good fisher into unintentional violation with dead fish #2? Also, how would it be enforced? A CO at the dock in September may not know you kept that 52" mount back in June. The only way to be enforceable is to develop a muskie license with a dead fish tag something like a deer hunting license and buck tag.

Agreed, just throwing out ideas that have worked with Sturgeon.

There is no guarantee the muskie program will always have funding… preservation might be the only option.

I dont mind.And make a 50 " limit state wide.

Will, you and King need to make a Muskie fishing video and sell it nationwide. Then youd have some green. If Bob M and Joe B can do
it,you guys could as well.Id pay 20 bucks for a DVD of Muskie casting
and trolling tatics/hints/info and some live action from the big boys.
More feizable(i know I didnt spell that one right)than winning the lotto.

Im sure there are plenty of college kids needing a project to pass a
film class of some sort that could help.My buddy got a complete business
plan for FREE from some kids at GVSU who needed to complete a class
assignment. They went as far as to stand outside the potential location
and hand count the number of cars that went by.Yes, he got the loan
no problem.

I support a tag. There are fewer muskies in Michigan than there are Deer. A kill tag issued at extra cost. The D.N.R. might make a few extra bucks this way. This way the incidentental walleye fisherman who bags a big fish would have to let it go unless he had the tag 8) 8) . Kid Coulson, Jim Saric is pretty. I'M NOT Laugh Laugh . I have done a couple of trolling seminars ,one in Pittsburg at the 2001 show. I have thought of shooting video footage but to get a good camera man on the water for the days it would take to make a good video is out of our price range. I dont have the knowledge to build a video myself. The editing part of it requires a video mixer much like the sound mixers we use in the band. Adding music and sound would be easy. Shooting video would be easy as well but with non pros shooting the footage it takes 5 times the footage to get good clear usable stuff. Its the editing that kills the regular guy like me. I would support it. It should be used like a deer kill tag, and placed immediately on the fish being kept. If the DNR were to find any muskies in the boat that weren't tagged, they should be held as accountable as anybody poaching a deer. Or punished even harder as there are many more deer than there are muskies! Also any money generated from these fines should go toward helping the stocking program.

I have seen Laura Morrison on a few video's but haven't seen one done primarily focussing on a female. We have the Muskies, Inc. Women's National Champ as a member of MMA, so why not have Mrs King put out a video and also use it to advertise Fishall Lures.
Or like the Kid said, have segments by different people like the muskie school idea where the experts in each area from our club have a segment. Even throw in a Pike segment by Esox Angler writer Joe Bednar.
Just a couple thoughts.

Only prob with the kill tag for a muskie is for people like us who don't intend to go out and kill one. For deer, there's now question about the outcome. Would that mean that all of us would need to get a kill tag just in case we botch a catch and can't release so we don't get in trouble if there is a CO around? What do they do with sturgeon Will?

I could do a video segment on how not to fish for Esocids if that helps. On the permit/tag issue I agree, have been dreaming of that for years for both pike and muskies, more realistically it might have a chance for muskies at this point in time. The concept of an extra charge is used for trout and salmon already, and muskies are the most expensive to manage of all. Maybe to raise more money and help offset resistence to one fish a season, an angler could buy multiple tags a year with a limit of 3. Or maybe a muskie stamp is required to fish for them at all, with up to 3 harvest tags allowed at extra cost. I'd love to see us try to make some form of this approach happen in Michigan, and as a side note we could be the catalyst that inspires other states!

I believe the Esocid Committee was actually going to make the same changes for muskies as they did for sturgeon a while back. Not sure why they didn't follow through with it.

I like Dans idea as more likely to be accepted. But yes, I would support a 1 per season.

I'm not sure they are done with that. The 2008 regs. aren't approved yet.

Basically would be impossible to enforce a possesion limit/year..
People already run back to their cabins/homes to drop off fish (daily possesion limit) and then come back for more …
(Sturgeon has limited season/location in most places..)

Size limit easier to enforce given muskie season/loactions..
(Have been checked by DNR at Thornapple on size: "See you were fishing for
musky ..Any luck ? (Yes) What size?? (36 inches) Keep it?? (No) .etc.."
