Can anyone tell me why the muskies in Austin Lake have spots, rather than bars? I'm not very familiar with that lake, so I'm curious what has been historically planted there.

forgive the horrible pic but here is a northern strain from murray (my first fish so ignore the fact its on my carpet flopping around). basically northern strain can be a mix of the coloration, so its not always accurate to say northern strains are barred and gls are spotted. ill put a pic of a gls that looks barred too. it really has a lot to do with water clarity too, and they seem to grow out of it too.
some people can probably tell you what batch of northern strains that one came from…

Shallow clear water seems to produce fish that look like that. I've got some old photos from Austin and they look almost like St Clair fish.

Yea really depends on clarity, in canada this year i caught 4 different looking muskies all out of the same lake and they all look different.

Just depends on the water they are sitting in for long periods of time.

Bass do the same thing if they are shallow or deep in weeds

I have seen some Osterhout fish also look similar to this with more of a spotted pattern rather than barred.

Conversely I have also thought some of the upper Antrim Chain fish I have seen look more like Northern Strain than GLS (which I think JPs 2nd photo is from the upper chain). They look nothing like the fish in the lower chain even though they are the same strain of fish. Environment seems to have a drastic effect on their color and patterning.

This isn't a spotty, but definitely the darkest pigmented fish I have caught. the Dark Olive seemed more extreme than the picture shows.
