My neighbor is taking a trip to fish the St. Mary's River for muskie in the early summer. Has anyone fished it before? Any advice? He also mentioned he'd be fishing a lake called Muskinonge Lake, but I can't find any info on it, so I wonder if he has the name wrong. I see Muskallonge Lake, but I don't think that's what he meant. Any info on type of forage, baits to use, etc. would be great. Thanks!!!!

St.Mary`is HUGE water.Have fished from downtown all the way down to munuscong bay(lake).LSC ish looking great lakes water, cleat to blue to stained and even brackish in bay de was and other bays.River is mostly that a river with the shipping channel kinda out in the middle, river is about a mile wide in it`s normal width. Some decent weed beds, some dangereous rock shoals.Go later in the year.july-oct as this river`s current runs at a pretty swift pace and runs cold late into the spring/early summer.River has all main forage and fish from salmon to sturgeon(seasonal).Mainstays are herring, perch, bullheads, pike, smallmouth, walleye.whitefish, and a few skies.
heading southest ..I believe..the river forks…either left to canada….scenery changes dramaticaly to the shield like conditions…or continue to the right..which is kinds going in a somewhat straightline from where you started.Plenty of numbered buoys, but you need a good map and decent rig.Did make it down to munuscong once with tiny bubbles and a 8 horse…coast guard pulled me over out in the middle of munuscong…lol
Munuscong is where you want to be,look for weeds in 10-14fow.Huge water, can get rough fast.wallyes, pike, perch, and muskies are the draw here.Pretty clear to stained here.Perch/walleye,sucker colored lures seem to shine,You can find other ramps to save on the $$gas and travel.I like the 10-20 mile boat ride and scenery thru the area and rock cut narrows.
