[quote="Will Schultz"]The only way a spearing ban goes back on Austin is if it becomes a broodstock lake.
And I'm guessing that probably won't happen because it would take them forever and a day to capture fish seeing as how the entire lake is shallow. 🙄
…and too big w/ a disease history.

My opinion was that with the spearing present the ONLY way this lake should get fish is if there are extra fish after all other waters have been stocked.
With the GLS being phased in and only four culture ponds available, there will never again be a case of all stocking goals being met. Sorry about that.

Don't be so sure about that. The total number requested each year hasn't really changed. Based on the early stage hatchery survivability of the GL strain, with enough eggs, there certainly could be a surplus.

I like the sound of that Will!

I like the sound of that Will! Yes, I love Will's optimism. I was just thinking of all the drowned river-mouth lakes and the Saginaw Bay that would need our full production as start-up programs leaving little for inland maintenance.
Sagimaw Bay will never happen if we're smart. There are no plans for the drowned river mouths any time soon. That leaves what we have requests for now, which doesn't exceed about 35 thousand fish.
They are not hard at all to find on Austin, found some tonight and would be happy to point the DNR in the right direction if they made it a broodstock lake.Lifting the spearing ban was a complete waste of a resource IMO, and yes I know they were extras to begin with. Also, Mr Wesley emailed me saying there was a possibility of stocking in the next year or 2. He cited alot of interest in Austin as the reason. Close to Wolf Lake too.
