Does algea bloom go all the way through out the water column or does it only go down a couple feet? The reason I ask, is topwater lures just don't work at all for me in bloom, and usually neither do any lures in the top couple feet of the water column. But as soon as I start trolling, say five foot down, I do get some results. Is it more clear down there? When there is no bloom I can get them to go on a variety of presentations. Why is that?
The depth of the bloom is usually related to wind and boat traffic. On calm days it rises near the surface and may only be a couple feet down. During these times topwaters and others that run in the top couple feet still work well. Unfortunately on most of our water a calm day usually means lots of boat traffic which mixes the lake. A heavy bloom will go fairly deep but, as you noted, getting down to 5-6 feet is usually where you'll start finding fish. During a heavy bloom you can see it on a graph and you'll know exactly how deep to start.
Don't fear the bloom water though… I've caught some BIG fish during heavy bloom conditions on topwaters and bucktails. It seems once they get used to the bloom it doesn't seem to bother them like it does during the first week or two of a bloom. Approach it like you're night fishing and your results may change.
