Hi All,

i have the "FISH MICHIGAN 100 NORTHERN LOWER LAKES BOOK" But it is the one that is NEWLYREVISED in 2000. On the Wixom lake page, he, Tom Huggler details that a 50lb. Muskie was awaiting master angler certification out of Wixom.
Now Tom Huggler is a formost michigan outdoor writer, but is this just a ploy to get you fishing wixom, much like the dnr's sportsman connection books, or do any of you know if there may be truth to this ??
I checked the master angler notes for wixom and did not see anything close to 50lbs. Besdies the fact, wouldnt it be a state record for a great lakes or nothern strain? I know the tiger is like 51lbs. and change.
So I was just curious ….we have 2 weeks till the opener, so i thought i would toss this out to see if anyone had answers..lol

Not sure if it is a 'ploy' or not, but can be reasonably sure it is not accurate information. There is a snowball's chance in Florida that a 50 lb. fish could have been swimming in the lake in 2000, but that's about it. It would have had to survive against all odds as a spring fry plant, swim downstream over a dam to get in to the lake, and then there is probably potential to get to 50. But, as you say it is not in the Master Anglers, and as far as the 'certification' goes, there aint much to that as can be evidenced by other entries, so there must not have been much credibility there. The biggest test would be for a fish that big to escape all the muskie fisherman's attention, and even the local DNR wasn't aware of that fish when I asked.

So, you're going have to go catch the first verified (estimated, please) 50 pounder out of Wixom!!

If you start to really examine the information from Tom's Fishing Michigan Books you'll discover many questionable bits and pieces of data. So much so that I asked him about it 4 or 5 years ago during a fishing show at the Lansing Center. He stated he did the best job he could and I believe he's sincere, but he has not even been on many of these lakes. He relied on second and third hand sources in some cases in order to compile what he hoped to be an authoritative and accurate analysis of the fishing opportunities in each body of water. I used to use these regional books in order to get a GENERAL OVERVIEW of what lakes are in the specific area and how they are laid out, launching information, and what species are present. I found the book on the UP very helpful in order to develop a fishing tour vacation trip there many years ago.
