I've been wanting to tie up my own leaders for a while now but I just can't justify to my wife the cost of a spool. Does anyone know where I can get some cheaper stuff or if anyone has some extra that they'd be willing to part with? I'm sure a deal can be worked out. Thanks for the help.

If the cost of flouro is a concern I would strongly suggest that you don't use it at all. I go through flouro leaders about three times faster than single strand wire leaders because once they have any kind of nick or rub on them I replace them immediately. If you just want to make your own leaders get some Mason single strand wire in 105# or 120#, you'll be very happy with them and have a leader that is super strong.

I managed to find some in a price I could handle paying without feeling sick about it. My next question is, since the diameter is as thick as it is and the line's as stiff as it is, how do you really get a good cinch on the knot? I tried tying a couple of different knots(uni, surgeon's, figure 8 loop) and I couldn't get the knots to tighten very well. Is there a technique I'm missing here? Also, what knot should I use? I'm having a hard time figuring that out. Thanks again.

I tied this one in 100# flouro. Don't know how it'd work in the thicker stuff… but it makes a nice, neat knot that hasn't failed me yet. I fused the fly end of the fluoro with a lighter in this (admittedly crappy) pic, hence the darkened mushroom shape. I now don't think this is necessary, and have since cut the mushrooms off, since they just snag weeds.

That knot might be a little easier than the Uni knot. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

i tie a nail knot to the snap and swivel and a palomar knot from my main line to the swivel also i use fishin glue on the flouro knots. i have a little tool from rollie and helens to tie the nail knot. the last set of leaders i made were out of 100# berkley vanish and i was happy. i've been considering going up to 130#.

A key to tying good knots in heavy flouro is to use lots of lube and pull the knot really tight, then glue it. I attach the swivel or solid ring to a small S-hook that I've attached to the wall so I can pull really hard on the line. If you don't snug the knot down tight it will try to open (the superglue helps stop that too).

Very nice Cyber, I was thinking the same thing. Thanks for the tip about having something to attach the leader to for pulling the knots tight, I'm gonna have to try that one.
