Since they are plastic and float, I would believe they are hollow. I have one I bought unpainted and would like to put a large rubber tail on it. What would i use to seal the tail after opening it up with the bandsaw? Thanks.

Before you cut that one open, Drifter sells a Super Believer with a large rubber tail already on it. Maybe check that out as an alternative before cutting into it.
Also, if you do put the tail on the believer you have, the one problem is with the tail coming out. I talked to Joe from Trueglide about his rubber tail lures and he drills two small holes in the tail section of the lure, one on the top and one on the bottom so he can put a toothpick through the rubber tail and breaks the ends off flush with the outside of the lure. Then he seals it. The toothpick will hold the rubber tail in much better then glue alone. It will also swell inside with water and not move.

I looked at those already. I dont need one that big. Want I was after is how would one close off the opening, with a piece of lexan and epoxy? Maybe a hole in the plastic to stick a curly tail through? There was a 'plastic bait glue' offered a few years ago that I never ordered. Would a 'super glue' off store shelver work as well???

Finlander – I'm confused… how is what you want to do different from what they already make using the 8 and 10" jointed Believers? You responded to Tom by saying that you don't want one that big – do you mean you don't want the tail that big or that you wanted to use the 6"?

If you want to use the 6" just copy what Drifter does with the 8 and 10" to make their Super Beliver. Chop the tail and insert the grub tail using any superglue. If you want to do a little more work I have a better solution but maybe you're not using the jointed… which prompts this question – Do you want to do this with a straight Beliver? If so then it will take a little more work but I have an excellent solution.

Please clarify and I'll give you some ideas.

My brother did something similar to another bait. He took a small plastic cap(think like syrup top) depending on size of hole and put a grub holder. (Like a small cork screw) through it and then epoxied it in the hollow tail section. It lasted all year as far as I know. The tails just twisted in. Not the most solid sounding but seemed to work.

I dont want my finnished lure to be that large. It is a jointed one for starters. There are 2 ideas I could try. Remove the small tail and then add a grubbed treble. What I first thought of doing was slice open the tail and add a grub to that. Maybe add a rattle too. This would still be a jointed bait.

I also have a small non jointed SwimWizz that could use a makeover. Tell me, Mr. Schulz, some ideas on how to dress this one for the dance.

Sounds like what you're thinking about doing will make it look like this:

I just looked at one today and there is not a split ring between the halves. So if I cut the wire to add a grubbed treble, the original caboose cannot be reattached. Oh well…fire up the bandsaw.

Is that a three hook swim whizz or a two hook? If it's a three hook don't change a thing, you have one of the best twitch baits for in the weeds ever made.

I had trouble finding it, too many lures. Alas it is a two hooker. I thought you'd want to use a staight bait, Suick, in the weeds, not something that went side to side.

My Suicks don't go straight… 🙄

Buoyancy is important in the weeds. A lures ability to hit a weed clump and back out of it is important.

If you want to alter that Swim Whizz you can cut it the same way as the believer but you'll need to seal the body. I've done it by putting a little masking tape on the inside then filling with epoxy. I hate to let this secret out but… when you seal the body wrap the tape around a 1.5" wood screw. Push the screw in so it's a little more than 1/2 inch inside the body making sure the tape is sealing the hole then fill with epoxy. You'll end up with 1" of the screw sticking out of the bait. As the epoxy is setting make sure the screw is straight to the body. Once the eopxy is dry cut your desired rubber tail to length and screw it onto the screw halfway. On the last 1/2 of the screw put some super glue before screwing the tail on all the way. You may want to glue the tail to the bait also but it isn't needed.

Ok I'll try it. I remember I bought it at Gander in Grandville. It's a small one, 'bout 6 inches. What was so important about the one with 3 trebles? Once saw muskie video that had Doug Johnson in it, talking of fishing the weeds with a straight running lure. You dont want a lure going side to side in the weeds. Now, I don't know what weeds he is talking about, thick or thin?

When Doug is talking a side to side bait he means a bait with a lot of horizontal movement. He uses the 10" believer in the same areas he uses a 10" Suick, again buoyancy is key for a bait in thick stuff.

He talks about it on the 'Secrets of the musky masters' I believe. Once the bait hits the weeds you simply stop the bait and let it float back up so it doesnt get caught. He also likes them because of the rounded lip that pushes weeds out of the way. These baits are really weedless if fished right.

Just looked at the lure closely and there is not much of a thickness in the butt end of that thing, and that's where they put the rear hook. Still might open it up, put in some rattles and foam, and epoxy…and oh yes, a wood screw. Might even float in the end. Doesn't look like the snow's gonna melt this weekend. Might just as well tinker. Might even watch 'Secrets of the Muskie Masters. Thanks to all for the tips….
