This is my favorite method for adding rubber to a wood bait. The same method can be used for solid plastic baits. If using this method for hollow plastic baits you need to plug any the opening using foam or a foam epoxy combination.
– Prepare the wood by cutting off the end to match the size of the plastic dressing.
– Drill an appropriate size hole for the screw, a loose fit is fine because you’ll epoxy the screw in place.
– You can seal the end of the wood w/ envorotex before drilling or you can use the epoxy that will be holding the screw in place.
– Clip off the screw head because you’ll be inserting the head end into the bait.
– Trim the rubber tail to the right size and length.

Epoxy the screw in place. The amount of screw showing will depend on the size of rubber tail that will be attached.

Apply superglue to the screw and the flat end of the lure before screwing the rubber tail onto the hook. Be sure to line up the seam on the rubber tail so that it is as vertical as possible.
The finished product…

Muskies USUALLY t-bone a lure. Does putting a sharp tipped screw out the end of a lure concern you?
I suppose if I wasn't fishing with lures that had huge hooks attached it might concern me – LOL. Seriously though, if you feel better about cutting the end of the screw off it would NOT effect screwing the rubber onto the screw.

I know you posted earlier that only 1/2 inch should stick out. The screw in the pix looked alot longer. Just curious…
There is 1" of screw sticking out of the back of that bait. In the beliver thread I said – "Push the screw in so it's a little more than 1/2 inch inside the body making sure the tape is sealing the hole then fill with epoxy. You'll end up with 1" of the screw sticking out of the bait."
You'll want to vary the screw length to the rubber you are attaching. If I was only going to attach a small 3" grub then I would use a 1" screw and only leave 1/2" sticking out. Attaching 1/2 of a 8" super goober works much better with at least an inch of the screw sticking out.
