DO NOT use this as an example of a good figure eight.

Some lakes are better than others for sure and some lures are better than others. I've got a handful of baits that when I have a fish follow I expect to catch them. I've got a boat-full of baits that I do everything I can to make a fish eat before it gets to the boat because I know I don't want them in a figure eight.

is it just me or does it look like the guy tries to snag the fish after it hits and starts to swim away. I know hes most likely not trying to but he does come awfully close.

jasonvkop-
I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but it really looked like that to me also. Maybe he was just trying to quickly get the bait back in front of the fish.
Will-
I think that the biggest flaw here is the lack of speed. I believe this fish would have bit harder and a couple turns earlier if he would have gotten aggressive and sped things progressively on each turn.
Another 'no no' that you see here is him setting the hook away from the fishes mouth. Although it is sometimes almost impossible to do, I think your hooking/landing percentages go way up if you set the hook back into the fishes mouth. A snoot-hooked figure 8 fish is usually only a couple head shakes away from running your day.
NSTAGATOR-
Water clarity plays a big factor in a fishes willingness to figure eight but I believe fishing pressure is the biggest factor. I fish some dark waters where the fish get heavily pressured and they won't 8 unless they are extremely hot. Normally they look they are being shot at when they approach the boat.

To have a chance, dont take it out of the water and cast away.

I can't believe I just saw that! Not even an L-turn. Maybe it wasn't going to eat but you've gotta at least keep the bait in the water to give it a chance.

From what I saw… the right move was to get the bait out of the water and cast back immediately. Based on the wake and boil at the boat, it looked to me like that fish spun away making a cast back the best option. Honestly though… the best choice (IMO) would have been to put that bait down and give that fish something different OR have your boat partner throw another bait to the fish.
