Rumor has it that some of the local boys in the UP are pushing to open up the water on the Wisonsin-MI border to spearing. It seems as though the DNR is listening. I don't know what can be done to limit t muskie spearing but it would seem that opening more waters to it would not be a good place to start. I happen to know a biologist with the DNR who would love to see it stop but he feels that there is more pull to open waters than there is to end it all. Any suggestions or questions please respond. I feel that in order for our muskie fishing in Michigan to reach it's full potential spearing must end. Another rumor I heard was there was a banner year of spearing on Skegmog.

If it actually came down to how much "pull" there is from each side of the issue, I don't know who would win that tug of war??? In some areas of the state the no-kill muskie anglers dominate, and in others they are far outnumbered by selective harvest (at best) pro-spearers. I don't think there's any question that from the general public point of view, those with no stake or interest in muskies, they would come out on the pro-spearing side of things I'm sure.

But the DNR is doing a better job than they have in the past of doing what is right for the resource, rather than just bending to public pressure. We can only hope that they are aware of what is best for the resource!…
