Just read the latest M.I. and it got me wondering. What does everyone use to sharpen? I made an impulse buy from Rollie's and got a Sur-Sharp with a blue handle. Listing didn't describe it well. Turned out it wasn't stone. Some kind of rough wire side by side. What is good out in the boat, away from electricity? Thanks.
Hello,
There are a lot of hook sharpeners out there. Most will do the job, but the biggest problem I see with the use of sharpeners is oversharpening. I've seen a few guys that looked like they were playing a violin while they were doing their hooks. Unless your hooks are damaged(replace em), all it takes is a lite gentle swipe of the cone to get the hook plenty sharp again. If too much hook material is removed trying to "sculpt" a sharp cone, the hook material will be damaged and the hook should be replaced.
As far as I am concerned, if I have a hook thats bent even slightly at the point(unless the hook is intentionaly made that way) , and I try to "file" the point sharp again I am pretty much fighting a losing battle.
Once a guy gets good at sharpening a hook point the first thing you DO NOT want to do is test the sharpness of the point on your fingernail or anything else. It's pointless to do that, it dulls the point and you have to start over again. Good luck and have a nice day,
Greg Schultz
