If your casting, 40% of muskie hit in the first 5' of your retreive and 40% hit at boatside, so pay special attention to these area's, make sure your bait is moving when it hits the water, and always finish at boatside with doing an "L" into a large oval or figure 8, do this every time whether you see a fish or not, they will come out of nowhere. The 20% in the middle of your retreive is not wasted space, this area is where you work on your presentation, to get there attention and tempt them into striking.

Glad to have a new face in the crowd. I don't know alot about Black but have fished it a few times. There are some good breaks all the way around the lake that can be casted. It is a HUGE lake and can blow up on you pretty quick so be mindful of the weather. Also do not overlook the river i have seen some submarines in there. As far as baits I can't say as I have not exactly knocked em dead there. I would suggest that with a few guys in the boat you throw a buffet at them. One bucktail, maybe a glide, and a crankbait for sure, The water is very clear so stay with natural colors and watch for very deep follows. Many people -me included- dont look deep enough when watching behind/below a lure. Clear water allows them to lurk further off the bait. You may want to try JaymeW for info he is the resident expert on that area. Good luck-post pics!!

Also there are a lot of meatfishermen/meatheads in that area as it is heavy on the spearing. Be careful who you say what to, no sense arguing with idiots on your vacation. We ran into a guy in a bait shop that was a real treat.

I have spent a ton of time in that area in my life, not really musky fishing but always observing. I would venture to say that you need not leave the river on your entire trip. Fish the entire thing concentrating on the first 300 yards and the last where the river meets the Alverno dam. My suggestion is to have everyboby in the boat throwing some form of blade bait. White with silver blades try the bass sized spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and mepps musky killers. Thr RIVER is the place to be. Also try the confluence of the black and cheyboygan rivers you'll have to trailer there but the fishing is worth it.

Have fun and post some pics.
