Thanks for all the replies to the mileage question. I didn't take time to perform statistical analysis, just general observation. I wanted myself and others to get a feel for the distance needed to be a musky fanatic (complimentary term). For many MMA members it takes more travel time and money to enjoy fishing for muskie than most other fish. This also helps me to understand the individual responses to the debates of stocking muskie lakes.
Michigan is gradually building up its muskie program to fill in the distance gaps between quality muskie lakes. As the program finally reaches its due funding and full culture production, I believe our lively MMA muskie stocking debates will mellow down to fine tuning. I also believe the MMA organization will take growth spurts with each new muskie lake within shorter driving distances. The new members will be able to spend money on basic muskie tackle instead of expensive gas.
about 1 hour in three different directions. from Muskegon. I have a couple like Mac that are closer but do not consider that a very good bet. Ill drive three hours to get to good water where I have a real chance at a 50 " fish. There are 42 inchers in most of the stocked lakes now but 50's in only a handfull and 30 lbers in even fewer. Need Spotteds stocked in the Chain of lakes and the Burt, Mullet ,Indian Rivers systems. These waters are lacking in numbers. This is where our fish that went to Wisconsin need to come back to. The spotted program should start there where they already are established but need supplemental stocking to improve the fishery and establish new brood stock. 25 thousand fish in each system would make a difference.
