I've been Pike fishing my whole life and now im obsessed with catching a Musky! I live in Marquette MI and so far I have had no luck. does anybody know of a good lake to fish around here? I know im new to the site but believe me im not just wanting to catch one to kill I am only interested in catch and release. any tips would help.
If you have a decent sized boat, Lake Michigamme is close by, only about 30 minutes west of Marquette. I have done well there for big pike and have seen several muskies taken there. Its a big pretty big lake with lots of bays and islands. Target these islands and bays as well as the rivers going in and out of the lake. Ive had my best luck in the Peshekee river and around the islands out from the river mouth.
Mostly upper 20s to 36 range with the occasional 40, havent fished Michigamme in awhile tho. I hear it has quite a few natural hybrids in it too since up there the spawn crosses more often.
The Peshekee River actually connects to Craig Lake which is a state park that does not allow motorized boats and it too has a good muskie population. The fish in my profile pic was a Tiger out of Craig. If youre into fishin from a canoe I would definitly suggest you try it out. Its a good hike back to the lake tho so be prepared for a portage.
I think its like 6 miles back to the parking spot on a two-track with lots of big rocks so make sure your car the clearance to get back there but once you get to the parking area its only about an 1/8 of a mile to the water to carry your canoe and gear. If your alone bring a canoe dolly, it helps out a ton.
Canoe fishing is my favorite, ultimate stealth and peaceful silence on the water…it can get dicey when landing a big one tho, especially if youre alone
Got this one on top water which usually works well in the stained water…if its slow on top water use something bigger that suspends with a slow retrieve that you can pause and twitch/jerk. Thats what Iv had the most luck with for big pike.
Good luck, it really is an amazing place, my favorite place to be in the whole state. Let me know how the water level is, it was a good 5-6 feet high when I was there a month ago. The water was above the cement canoe launch on the south side of the lake and almost up to the trail.
