DETROIT (AP) – The state Department of Natural Resources plans to collect about 500,000 eggs from Great Lakes muskellunge in the Detroit River this spring.

The DNR announced Monday eggs are being collected as part of an effort to rear 40,000 fish for stocking in Michigan waters this fall.

Collections started in 2011 in an effort to rear a type of muskellunge that's native to most Michigan waters. In 2014, about 430,000 eggs were collected from the Detroit River. Those eggs produced more than 36,000 fish that were stocked in 21 inland lakes and rivers.

To collect eggs, muskellunge are captured with electro-fishing gear. The DNR is asking boaters to avoid coming close to the electrofishing boat during the work, which is expected to take place at night this month.
