Moved to the East end of the UP for reasons I wont get into. Camped at Cedarville and found out there is a huge boatshow/pain in my ass in Hessel every year at this time. Went out Friday morning in 6 footers and fished the bays and channels. We found a lot of good water boulder fields in 14 FOW some weeds but no fish?? Not even a rock bass. We did forty plus miles and did not so much as see baitfish. Even went out to the shipping channel and fished an isolated reef that topped out at water level and fell into 80 feet of water. Should have found a Smallie or something BUT NNNOOOOOO!!! No fish for us however our personal storm cloud Steve did manage to soak us yet again. Got rained on 4 out of 6 days, all in all a typical camping trip. It seems like beteween the low water levels and the changes in commercial regulations the bay fishing has gone to crap in Lake Huron.

I personally don't believe there has been any more fish taken by commercial fisherman in the east end of the UP – they are 98% whitefish fisheries. I will agree with you on the fishing in Les Cheneaux's…….its hit nearly rock bottom. What I do believe is that the Fed's waited too long to do something about the cormorant population and now that they're oiling eggs and killing around 3500 birds a year (including Potaganissing Bay) lets hope its not too late for the populations of fish species to rebound. That black bird has practically ruined the perch fishery. Save a fish – eat a cormorant.

The regs I was referring to actually changed back in the eighties in the Georgian bay/ North Channel Canadian waters. We used to catch perch in the bays and then watched a drop in population when the shore distance limit changed.
