Fished: 9:30-7:30
Water temp: 70-71
Clarity: 6 feet or so; little more difficult to see due to heavy rain and wind
Weeds: Lots of celery gone but still a good amount hanging around. Milfoil doing okay as well
Well probably the best musky day I have ever had. Caught 6, lost 3 others. Saw 20 or so more fish as well. Sizes were: two low 30s, two high 30s, 40, 43. Fish were pretty hot and lots of the follows were very close to hitting at boatside (nipping at the bait, swinging and missing, etc). Like Will said, fish were in the shallow weeds (mainly celery) because of the cloud cover and heavy rainfall. Started the day fishing dawgs over the deeper weeds but moved only a couple of smaller, lazy fish. Moved up on the flats with a bucktail and had action right away. All the activity in the shallow weeds came on silver/silver DCG. 3 of the fish hit at boatside; the other 6 hit at the end of the cast. Fish werent really smashing the bait; lot of nipping at the back end of the bait.
When did most of your fish come? i thought that was you fishing that island right before my friend and i quit.. couldnt fish much longer the boat was filling up with too much water and we were both soaked even with our rain gear. All our fish we got boatside were with DCG's too, only had a few attack and not be lazy like some of the bigger ones we saw. Most of the follows were with a green/black DCG dominatrix, with green/Gray blad cause the black paint already peeled off the crappy blades. They didnt follow my brighter DCG as much. I wish we could of stayed out longer maybe we just missed our window to get some. good job
yep that was me; that was when i was still fishing the dawg. After that I went to two main lake points and fished those deep with dawgs and raised two smaller fish. After that I decided to try shallow and put on my bucktail. I basically had action all day long. I fished almost around the whole lake just to look for some new spots and I had action all the way around. I fished until 7:30pm so I was out there quite a long time but it was worth it when the fish were going like they were.
I saw you out early in the day. I was in the red boat working the east shore. We moved a few fish, but the action wasn't heavy. My buddy was working bucktails all 4 hours we were out and didn't move a fish. All four fish I moved were on gliders, with one strike. I also couldn't stand the rain much longer as we were soaked!
Good job Jason!
Scott
Scott, what time did u guys get out on the water? i saw you in that red boat pretty early. My friend and i fished from about 730 to 1130, but had the same luck as you only we had all our 10 fish come up to the boat on bucktails. I tried a glider for a while, but i didnt get any follows, the night before i did. I will be back out there next friday and saturday morning as well.
I was wondering if that was you Scott but couldnt really tell as everyone was bundled up in rain gear. After trying out deeper I basically had my boat right where you did (right on, or a little off, the edge) and worked those DCG really fast. Even had some stirkes and fish wake up as I bulged the lure. I did try out my dad's okuma 400 and it worked REALLY well. I will probably be getting one to throw those double tens with.
Yea, i was wondering how fast you were reeling them and thought that might of been the difference in the fish hitting or not casue once we got the DCG's close to the boat and were able to pull the baits fast on figure 8's or whatever they would go ballistic, but were scared easily cause they could see us moving. Definitely investing in some better gear ratio reels over winter. Prob get a Calcutta or Okuma with a better gear ratio. Even though we didnt get any it was my friends first time fishing or seeing a musky so he had a good time, hopefully we can pick some up this coming wkend.

Yeah I had a lot of fish boat shy as well. Some of them were coming in so hot I thought for sure they would hit on the 8 but when they came boatside they would bolt off. However, some of them bolted off but came back and hit the bait as I kept figure 8ing
