Water temp 35-36. Air temp around 30

Fished 10am-4pm. Very pleasant day on the water (for once!) Light winds made it comfortable. Found one smaller deep hole that was loaded with baitfish and larger fish. Spent a lot of time trolling spoonplugs, slow trolling a flatfish off a 3 way, and vertical jigging in the hole. However, no takers.

About 1/3 of the west arm is frozen, east arm and north end fully open, though I don't know for how much longer. If it's open towards the end of the week, I'll try again. Ramp area a little iced but still no problem if you have 4 wheel drive.

You would think, but in reality their metabolism is so slow in 39 degree water that they don't need to eat very often.

Why is it then that the fall muskies are know to be the "fatties"?

Jim,

Thanks for the referral to Pine Rest. When I check in, may I ask for your therapist? Hey, I'm only serious!! [smilie=2thumbsup.gif]
Fishing is slow late in the year, but I believe you have the potential to get a very heavy female, due to egg development. I have visions of the one I caught in January '08 which gives me all the motivation needed to sit out in the cold.

They've been gorging all summer long packing on the weight to get them through the rough times ahead. Couple that with the females developing some eggs and you get the fatties! The spawning rituals really take their toll on the fish and they need to pack on the weight before hand. Or so I've been told. No matter the reason, my experience is fish are generally fatter in fall. Just wish I could catch more of them!!!

As noted egg development accounts for some weight which starts in late summer. Cold water also means slower metabolism and therefore it is easier to maintain and gain weight. Fall, in some areas, can mean concentrated food and if it takes minimal energy to feed – minimal energy expended + cold water + eggs = heavy females. This is compounded when you are dealing with truly big females that usually spawn every other year, they are heavier going into fall after they have taken a spring off of spawning.

I humbly accept the award! Thanks. I'm hoping to get out Friday or Saturday, and with the weather forecast, maybe even into next week. Now all I have to do is catch one, which seems to be eluding me lately.
