Water Temp: 39-42
Weeds: Mostly dead
Clarity: Slight stain to clear

Slow trolling along the breaks turned up 6 walleye to 9lbs and one FAT pike of about 32" and three lost fish. The fish were weed, rock and wood adjacent with no apparent pattern.

Hey Will,
Sounds like you had a good outing. Mind if I ask what time you were fishing? I usually do pretty good after dark in the fall, I've had alot of luck in the past trolling Strawberry Isle.

Yep, after dark is the deal. I've heard of some decent daytime catches too but I've never tried it during the day.

So you couldn't resist… Good job! It is addicting… I wish I lived closer… I am hearing reports of lower numbers than the last couple years. The larger fish seem to be pretty scarce. Possibly just starting to come in??? We got 26 in 3 outings, but no trophy's.

The walleye fishery in Muskegon Lake is looking good for the next few years with the strong survival of the year 2006 191,536 stocking. They will be the good eaters coming two years. The after dark fishing can be a bit intimidating at first, but those that master it learn the contours well. For the MMA members that means you will be in the best position for the present pike fishery and future GLS fishery few years from now. Perch, bluegill, and bass fishing is also good as well as seasonal salmon and steelhead. Those with access to Muskegon Lake are indeed very blessed.

That's what I was hearing so I held off for a while, I don't need any in the freezer I'm just in it for a 17.5 lber. We got our butts kicked this Tuesday night and didn't put a fish in the boat. I've never had that happen out there, I've got a theory why it happened though. I won't fish it again after the wind was 25 with gusts to 40 all day… hyper-oxygenated water when it's below 40… that turns to slush and it's hard to breathe slush.

We kept a few and they are yummy! Those fish are so plump that keeping anything over 22/23 really doesn't make sense. I am really after the pigs as well. Did watch a guy get 2 11+ pounders and he reportedly got a 3rd that same night. Not sure if he had a special technique or a jumbo horse shoe… I think he knew what he was doing…

I love that lake… When I am seeing bait clouds in the lake off breaks channels (not the channel to Lake Michigan), what am I seeing? Is that Alewife? Perch? Shad?

FYI from Bob Kingsley, Most of the walleye were taken after dark by those casting or trolling body baits, such as the No. 10 or No. 12 Husky Jerk in the clown pattern, No. 12 purple perch and the glow Rattlin' Rogue. A few "eyes" also have been taken during daylight hours by those casting Rat-L-Traps near the mouth of the Muskegon River.
