Man I wish this lake was still stocked with Muskie. Water temps at 56 nice light breeze. Popped 10 Pike in 1.5 hours. Average size still small at 20 inches. They are headed for the fryer. I did see a bigger one so it looks like the no size limit is working as these Pike are getting bigger every year. Ill be releasing any over 25 inches this year in an attempt to get some into the size where they can eat smaller pike and get the population under control. Man this lake would be great if it had a couple hundred 36 inch Muskies in it . Hint Hint :). Crane 205 crank baits did the trick tossed into 6,7 and 8 foot weed patches. Bordering deeper water. We fished an area about 300 yards long . Caught 10 missed about 20 and saw about 20 more. Still tons of Pike in Big Blue. Mike and Michelle
In the 80's it was stocked with Tiger Muskies. At the time Pike were nice size into the 8 to 10 lb range. Blue gills were huge and there were good perch in the deeper water. Then came the excessive Walleye stockings. The lake has spiraled down ever since. Pike populations have exploded and stunting occurred. The last of the Tigers were gone by 1996 and without an Alpha predator this lake has slipped to the no size limit status for Pike. Its sad as it used to be a great lake . Some of the Tigers reached 48 inches in the early 90's. No trout in this lake. The good news is that there are a few Pike getting bigger and the lake should be considered for a slot limit in the next couple years. The main problem is still that the water gets too warm to sustain Large pike so Muskies are a better choice for Alpha predator. Either Slot limit on Pike or Musky stocking would improve this fishery.
