At the local barber shop in Schoolcraft, Michigan a man who lives on Bankson Lake in Van Buren County reported an attack from a muskie. A few days later, an employee from the Miracle Camp reported an attack to the barber also. The barber is a professional fishing guide from Hook Ya Up Charters so I consider him a reliable source.
The details I know so far are this:
A man working at the Miracle Camp was attacked when he swam under a water trampoline/island that sits below a wooden tower built to climb up and jump onto the trampoline, which in turn would catapault another person sitting on the end of the trampoline into the air and then into the lake. I have seen them do this many times. The man swam into the water to assist kids as they prepared to jump and play on the trampoline/island when the muskie that was underneath clamped on to his foot or leg. The man had to reach down to get the muskie to let go. 37 stitches followed.
I will post more details as I get them.
I just spoke with Larry from the Miracle Camp. He confirmed the attack. It happened in July to a guest who was helping his niece onto the floating raft/trampoline. He said the guy was bitten 3 times by the fish very quickly on his foot and the 3rd time wouldn't let go and it felt as though the fish was trying to pull him under. Larry said the man received 34 stitches and when they reported it to the DNR, they had only had one other report of an attack like this.
So my only question is, what company makes a lure that looks like a foot?
I questioned about that also, but Larry said the man had been treading water in 8-feet of water, basically he had to pull the fish off to avoid going under do to the fish clamping on and not letting go. It did sound a bit like something out of Jaws or the novel Ferocity! I sent an e-mail to the DNR to see if I could get any more info on it but haven't heard back as of yet.
Man!!! Dont go skinny dipping in Bankson especilly if you have a Magnum Willie bait .
Muskies are known to hit lures with verticle rise
I have swam in Muskie lakes and believe me its unnerving to think that a 50 incher might try to take my foot or hand. Big Muskies have attacked people before in Wisconsin and Lake St. Clair. A young lady was (trolling) dangling her hand from a canoe in Wisconsin years ago and a big one shredded her hand ,137 stitches. Young man sail boarding on St. Clair foot bitten. Its not the first time. Probably want to keep this attack low key ,dont want to scare the masses into opposing our fish. Mike and Michelle
