Fished the morning on 6/20 to try to take advantage of moon rise and overcast conditions. Went 1 for 2 on a twitch bait in the developing cabbage. Both fish were large walleyes, the one I landed went 25" . The other followed back to the boat twice and took 1 lap of a figure 8 before swimming off. Water temp was 64 65 both days.
Fished the evening on the 21 with my son . Blue skies and Windy. Caught a couple pike , but the real excitement happened when hit the spot in which I lost a giant last week. My son hooked into what he called a "small" fish . Suddenly, the fish started to peel drag like nobody's business . I remember telling him " I thought you said it was small" his reply was " it was". The fish stayed deep , ran my son around the boat a couple times. The few minutes seemed like an eternity. Slowly he gained line, I readied the net. The fish was now below the boat. My boy looked into the water " holy crap! It's huge! " Was his exact words. At that moment the line went slack. The fish was gone. He reeled up the bait and it became clear what had happened. A dead 18" pike hung lifeless from the lure. The big girl grabbed the hooked pike in back of the head , safely away from any treble hooks. It's starting to get personal .
What a riot. Always disappointing to lose a big one, but greater to even see them in the first place. My son and I were just talking about the first rod I built him, which was broken bluegill fishing on Murray. He was reeling in a bluegill and I took a minute to organize the boat and he started giggling and saying it got bigger! Anyhow, the bluegill got munched by a muskie that proceeded to break his new rod… which I then had to rebuild. Love the stories these crazy fish create!
