Short story… had a freiken blast!
Longer story:
A buddy and I went to Miami while on a trip to that general area with family.
We fished with a guy named Carl Ball, at AWOL fishing charters. He came highly recommended by a guide friend from Michigan that moved to the keys to fish. He will remain highly recommended!
Started the day in a smaller cove right near downtown Miami, after launching from Key Biscayne. We temporarily hooked 2 tarpon casting articificials, but then soon came unhooked. There were a bunch of fish there, but none seemed to care to eat much. It is apparently a very tide oriented fishery, and as it started going out we shifted to a bottle neck area. There we hooked 5 more in a matter of about an hour, and "landed" 3 of them. A couple ran for some man made structure and we had to try to stop them, to no avail. A couple hit boatside, which was as cool as it sounds… And all were as aerial as you could have asked for, including one that ate boatside and nearly jumped in the boat. The first fish we had to the leader made one short burst, after seeming to be tuckered out, and as it was sitting near the surface 30' away got SLAMMED by a shark! The guide said the shark was in the 4-500 lb range, and was the most ridiculous thing I had ever seen. It came from under the boat and looked like a figure 8 hit on steroids, except the bait was a 5' long tarpon that weighed in the neighborhood of 100 lbs.
Because of this instance, we were fine with some long distance releases in the next couple fish we hooked.
After the Tarpon adventure we went sight fishing for permit.
Though not nearly as large as the tarpon, they are just about as fun. I think they are a bluegill/tuna hibrid or something. We went 4-4 with my last coming on the fly and as part of a double. The sight fishing was difficult with winds, and the casting even more so, but we looked for current spots with the tide going out thru channels. Definitely a cool experience. The first came in an area like a shoal, leading out to the ocean from the flats area, Muskegon river type currents with rocks and piles of really hard weeds that they wanted to hide under. The guide had me on the front of the boat, litteraly chasing the thing around in circles on the gas motor for 15 minutes. It was the most fun and comical thing I have ever done! Nearly a week later I am still grinning 😀

Still haven't gotten around to pic hosting, or I'd post some, maybe this will encourage me…
Anyhow, it is a highly recommended experience if you ever get a chance. I will going back ASAP.

Awesome! Tis' the season for Florida Tarpon! Great job! Yes…Tarpon are very tide oreinted! Permit are also amazingly fun and super challenging on a Fly Rod so kudos!! Two of the most challenging fish to catch on Fly! Tarpon are everywhere down there right now all along S. Florida and Keys. I'll be down there off and on the next two months chasing Tarpon and Permit on fly. Awesome report!!
