Squeezed in a little fishing on a family "circus"/camping trip. Tried big ol' Indian Lake for the first time, I was unable to personally verify the existence of muskies there… it's a big flat bastard and tough to narrow down spots, but I found some good looking stuff and tried the most obvious spots. Fun to try new water, But I am pretty sure the picture years ago in the back of Musky Hunter magazine of a big fish that was labeled "Indian Lake" Michigan was not actually Indian Lake, because the tannic water I found did not match that picture. At least if my memory serves me about that. But I'm still not sure if the recent stories and rumors of muskies there are just from its Tiger days, or not?
Anyway I also stopped in at Grassy Lake, which definitely has more than just rumors. Didn't spend much time there as a musky guy was already there doing Solo Hunter style camping and fishing. Didn't want to intrude on his solitude and awesomeness.
Rounded out the trip with a Tahquamenon stop. It was sorta painful to be in God's country for 5 days and fish so little, especially with cool comfortable weather and ideal water temps around 70, but I knew going in it wasn't a typical fishing trip. Had a good time with the fam and did make the most of the limited hours on the water!
Yeah it's been raining right steady up north. I was up the same time as you but fished the Lower River. Dock is half under water at the mouth too with Lake Superior up. Oh I'm definitely not ruling out Indian based on my first few hours on it, that is not what I'm saying at all and I think they're in there. I have had a local musky angler tell me he doesn't think there are any in there anymore though, but I doubt that
Sorry for leaving out this part! 😀 grabbed my favorite pick up pizza in Gaylord on the way up and on the way back, love Mama Leones. Also had Pictured Rocks Pizza in Munising, neat little shop there with a sub style ordering counter. Pretty good!
Thanks for the report Duke. Drove by Indian Lake just a few weeks ago and we have been talking about giving it a try but its definitely intimidating and looks like a beast to figure out but the rumors are intriguing. Nice work giving it a shot.
Speaking of pizza in the UP, a bit further west from there, if you're ever in the Watersmeet area, there is a little pizza place a stones throw south of the border in Land O' Lakes, WI called TJ Grizzlies. If you like thin crust style pizza, it will not disappoint.
