the lake was pretty calm all day, got pretty hot, surface temps up to 81 around 3 pm. had one fish roll a talonz never saw the fish, pretty sure I jerked it out of her mouth, I have a tendency to do that with the bait, not very patient! the weeds were grown up really good, which helped to point out the drop offs for me. a funny scenario while I was trolling. I decided to troll the points pretty hard in the afternoon, especially since the weedlines pointed them out amazing, came around the second point south of the launch, not howards but the other one that usually has one mean swan that rules that part of the lake! I was trolling a super believer, bought it the day before because I realized I lack baits to troll down deeper. while going around the point I got a little to close to the weeds and my transducer had come off. I put the boat in idle and set my rod down. while pulling it in my rod came flying back and hit my leg. I picked it up to set the hook just in time to see a huge fish jump up and spit my bait 3 feet in the air. Im pretty sure it was a big northern I saw the pattern on its side, but it was a big fish. I decided mostly out of anger to turn around and was going to troll a 50 yard section over and over again until it came back..lol 2 passes later my rod tightened and I saw MY FIRST HOG come to the surface. it is a whole new ball game netting a big fish by yourself, the hooks came out and it happened to be in the net, I must of done something right. Ill try and post some pics here soon but here is the link to the video I took of it, maybe you guys could tell me the length and weight of the fish, I was pretty nervous that it would die, I didn't bother measuring the fish. it kicked away really hard im sure its just fine. cant wait to get another, you guys were right, they are few and far between on thornapple but worth the time and the effort, now I need a 50'. 😀

Well done on the fish. Tough to tell, but I would guess her around 45"

A tip on releasing, you may not want to move em back and forth. They recover better just holding still. A little turn sideways is good, as they will easily right themselves when the are ready to go.

81, bummer, looks like non muskie fishing til late August or September for me.

Yeah it was pretty warm water. Didn't realize moving them back and forth was bad thanks for the tip.. When you pull up the Facebook page scroll down to the video clip and just click on it. I guess I could put it on YouTube but its literally halfway down the page just click on the video. I marked out my boat on the best clip of the fish when it was straight and measured 44 so ill call it 45!

Great job on the release! Congrats on the fish and so great to see you release it! Like Scott said, try not to move the fish back and forth as moving the fish backwards can actually drown the fish, but I'm not really going to nit-pick as you did an awesome job!

It sounds sad, but now I actually feel like I kinda belong in the sentence of being a musky fisherman. I have fished so hard this year to land a Muskie worth talking about. Some days I feel so lost when I'm out fishing because every other species that I have targeted I have seen immediate results and I have went out at least ten times with putting in a full days work with only northerns and bass to show which made me feel like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to and I have nowhere to turn but to you guys. Honestly I can't wait to meet everyone in this chapter and to keep learning from you all. Joining this site has started to mold me into a true fisherman and I am finally starting to truly understand how to target big predator fish and the importance of catch and release. When the fall hits I will have a lot of questions to ask bare with me! I love telling people I am a member of this club and Anyone who asks me about Muskie fishing I point them to this site. The knowledge that I obtain here is truly priceless and the wisdom you guys have about fishing is second to none.

Matt and I fished it today, the temps at 5:30am were only 75 and at 11 am they were only 76.5. I don't know what it was when we left because of a wire ripping out of my fuse box 😡 we did contact 3 fish one was a gooden'… stupid fish.

Awesome work Josh. Way to keep at it and put in the time for that one, you definitely earned it out there. Heck of a nice fish too. Thorn is a tough lake but it holds some nice ones, thats for sure.
