decided to go out this morning and evening. weed cover is definitely thick, water temp this morning was 75, at 5 oclock I read as high as 81, but mostly 79. didn't catch anything but a couple of pike, on 26 inches one 33, so still fun, and both came with some siblings in the boat so its still fun to see my younger brother say fish on… and reel in a pike! I love taking my family fishing, someday Ill get my dad to come. I read earlier that the higher the temp, the smaller window of oxygen level via the thermocline, so basically it forces the fish into a shallower window, and makes it hard for them to recover, the article also said that you can determine this on your fish finder by the depth of the fish that your marking….the last thing I want to do is kill a ski because its too hot to attempt to fish for them, can anyone explain how this is best determined??? Ive read from past posts that 80 plus water temps are too hot… does that mean that its okay to go fish 3 hours before sunrise when the temps are low and the sun is gone?? I guess im a little confused and it doesn't help I guess that I caught one 8 days ago when it was still fairly warm out with high temps. oh bye the way…my first fishing injury today lol… the smallest pike of the weekend I at 26 inches… I held it like a normal fish posing… when it shook and the teeth or the gill plate came crashing down on my knee cap when it shook and fell out of my hands for the picture… result 3 stitches in my kneecap and the doctor telling me to not fish or get in the water for 2 weeks… they must be high! im gonna go out in the morning I just cant fully submerge it so if anyone is mad at the guy taking a long time at the launch…its me come give me a hand or a knee either way!

No thermocline on Thorn due to the river flowing through it.

In my honest opinion, I wouldn't fish muskies now. If it warms to 80 at all during the day I don't want to fish. It takes fish, especially big fish a long time to recoup. Just because they swim away doesn't mean they live. The bigger the fish, the tougher they take it.

That is my honest 2 cents. I don't take offense if you fish, just not the decision I would make.

This time of year is when I bass fish, drum fish, big lake fish, pan fish… bide my time for the lakes to cool down a touch. July sucks for SWMI muskies.

I agree with scott, especially the way the forecast looks. IF it is warm in the morning then I wouldn't fish. Try bass fishing or something else for a while. Fish may swim down and look healthy on release, but a lot of people don't realize how many fish don't float to the surface after they die from exhaustion.

I fished Bankson yesterday morning. It started at 77 but quickly rose to 80 so I took off. I planned on water releasing any fish, but it was still pushing it probably. I'm done with muskies for a little while.

In hot water (around 80), morning is the worst time to fish because the dissolved oxygen is the lowest it will be all day. As mentioned above it is time to head to big water or chase alternative species until temps cool.

Very good to know, I was unaware. I am quite cautious about warmer temps as it is, but this is something I definitely did not know.

Dissolved oxygen levels are dictated by photosynthesis. Since no photosynthesis can happen overnight mornings will have the lowest levels. This is compounded when we're talking about high water temps which has reduced the dissolved oxygen carrying capacity of the water.

Sounds like a good time to crappie fish then. Feels weird using 4 pd test and hearing the drag go though lol. Surface temps reflect the air temps somewhat closely so after a week of mid 75 degree temps it should be okay?? Ill wait for a report to go back out I'm counting down the weeks!

I went out on thorn Sunday afternoon with my buddy and the lady friends on his boat. We didnt do any fishing, just cruised around a bit and joined the red neck yacht club in the southwest corner for awhile. Surface temps were up to 84-85 so it looks like fishing is done for a month or two now. It'll take quite a few cool days or cold nights to cool these temps back down to fishable levels again. If I remember from years past it is usually good again around Labor Day time down in this area but I could be wrong. Every year is different though, all depends on the weather.

A buddy and I went walleye fishing Sunday and they were rising fast, well into the mid 80's midday. The same local guy I keep finding floaters from is out again today, posting pictures on his Facebook. Some people just don't get it. I know this guy knows better, but then again he's the same guy I constantly see trolling 4 lines by himself so respect for the resource isn't something he's concerned with. Sorry for the rant, this is just one subject that really gets me fired up.

My brain hurts from trying to comprehend all the vagueness of this post, and all the "mentioning". LOL. [smilie=brickwall.gif]
