After a couple years of begging me to take her, I finally got my parents to take our kids for a day so I could help get Amy her first muskie. We headed out to LSC a little before 5am on Saturday morning. The day proved to be a little rough. More windy than what I was anticipating, and after a few hours of casting, Amy got a little sea sick. We had a ton of follows, and I lost 3 fish throughout the day. Amy was pretty excited just to see some of the muskies follow up her twitchbaits, but the only thing we managed into the boat thus far was a good sized smallie. We searched for better water with higher concentrations, and in the last hour of the day, we were finally on them. I was fishing a double 10, and I gave Amy a double 8. During the first drift, I noticed the water clarity change slightly, so I switched colors. First cast, and I was just saying to Amy, "Don't cast again. I'm going to switch colors on yours too" when I got bit. Amy did a heck of a job netting. I switched her bucktail out for a single 8 VooDoo tail. As I made my next cast, I noticed a mid 40's just cruising out in front of the boat. My bucktail came right over her head, and she never even flinched. I casted back out to the direction she was heading, and just burned my double 10 in. She came up hot on it, and engulfed it on the first turn, sticking 5 hook points. I had to cut 2 that went through her tongue. She bumped out at 46.5". So, 2 fish in 3 casts. I switched rods with Amy, in hopes that she could get the next one. But it seemed as though speed was the determining factor, as less than 10 casts later, I hooked another mid 40's, but she shook off just before the net with that cool open mouth headshake underwater. Amy couldn't handle the double 10 for too long, so we switched back. After about a 1/2 hour, I said that we really SHOULD be going to relieve my Mom of our 4 children. Surprisingly, she didn't want to leave! HAHAHA. I let her make a few more casts, then called out last cast. I moved the boat a little over some better looking weeds, and told her to cast "straight over there". As she's bringing it in, she says, "Well, I guess no muskie for me today", and just then, a silver missile flies out and grabs the bucktail 15' from the boat. It was a tug o war with both fish and woman flailing wildly. The fish jumped out of the water at least 3 times, Amy falls off the back casting deck, and yet somehow, I net the fish in the air on one of its airborne sommersaults. I was one proud husband, and she stated that this was the best date we've ever been on. She can't wait to get back out! Still not sure if that's a good thing, or bad… 😯
