Fished 11:30am until 9pm, water level and clarity good for Thorn, weeds progessing plenty since my last visit, should be topped out in most places soon depending on rains. Got a modest one in the early afternoon, and as often happens it was an isolated strike with mostly tough going before and after.
Then a good one taunted me in the evening, went back on her a while later and there she was again following close…yet in the gloom I could not see my lure…as I realized she slurped it in without me feeling any strike, and then as I tried tried to set the hook, she spit it out like a pumpkinseed in a millisecond, almost like something gave her a Heimlich maneuver as her big jaws and gills flared expelling it. She then glided by mocking me with what looked like a real humiliating smirk, and more efforts of course didn't give me another chance. I stayed up half the night replaying the lost opportunity in my mind, but that's musky fishing, and I'll be trying for that big gal again soon enough.
Joe,
As the saying goes, better to have loved and lost then to never love at all. That fish will keep your musky engine fired up well into the future. And the one you caught was pretty good too.
By the way, while fishing there yesterday, it didn't take long to figure out which swan was the bad boy. He seemed continuously angry! When I got near to him, I just yelled out your name and he backed off. I'll have to start calling "The Swan Whisperer!"
