Temp- 64-66
Clarity- usual 10+ft
Fished From: 9:45am-3:00pm

Set the DVR for the Lions game, refused to use the radio so I wouldn't hear the score and decided to squeeze in a few more hours before the weekend was over. (shouldnt have even wasted my time with Lions!) Tough day but did manage to land 1 smaller fish on a pounder. Fish have moved much shallower than they were all summer and were relating to various weed structures. Tried many differents baits throughout the weekend but as usual for me BIG rubber baits drew the most action.

Now on a sad note. I'm sure all the deer hunters out there have been hearing all the EHD horror stories. It is really bad down here. I have one buddy who has found over 50 dead deer on his property recently. I found two laying in the water over the weekend. This one here was an 8 point, the other was a doe. It is going to be a rough hunting season around here.

Good work on the fish… and thats a damn shame. When this first came up they put up stats on the previous few outbreaks and it wasnt THAT bad… considerring. But this round seems to be getting a good head of steam and is becoming more wide spread. I also noticed the frequency of infections increasing. I hope there is not something to all this… [smilie=confused.gif]

I think its because more people are out in the woods, and more infected/dead deer and being seen/found. I talked to a biologist during the summer and he said the initial numbers could be as low as 10% of the total number of deer infected.

Hopefully that is the reason its seems worse now, and that is actually not getting worse.

We first saw it down here in Berrien County two summers ago.
It worked its way thru Van Buren and Cass counties last year, and it took way more than 10% of the herd.

I am no hunter, but could this kind of be a good thing like VHS was on LSC awhile back? Don't we have too many deer in this state so couldn't this cut a lot of weaker population and be sort of good for the overall population??

I hope your right! I found some numbers on the DNR site about it.
the first infection was in 1955, and was "several hundred" deer between michigan and NJ. the rest is here:

Additional die-offs attributed to EHD occurred in Michigan in white-tailed deer in 1974, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The 1974 die-off occurred in several counties and resulted in approximately 100 deer dying. The 2006 die-off occurred in the south western portion of the state in Allegan County and involved 50-75 animals. In 2008, the die-off occurred in the south eastern portion of the state in Oakland and Macomb counties and involved 150-200 deer. In 2009, the die-off took place in the southwestern/southcentral portion of the state in Livingston County and involved 300-450 deer. In 2010, the die-off occurred in the southwestern portion of the state in Allegan, Berrien, Cass, Ottawa, St Joseph and Van Buren Counties with an estimated mortality of 1,025 deer. In 2011, the die-off occurred in the southwestern portion of the state again in Cass and St. Joseph Counties with an estimated mortality of 300 deer.

It just seems weird to me that we all of a sudden have a clump of infections after the first 3 being spaced over 51 years.

Sure, it could "help" in overpopulated areas, but EHD does not attack weaker deer. It can kill any deer regardless of age and health. Since its not transmitted from deer to deer (carried by biting insects), its really not a matter of overpopulation.
