Headed up to Western UP on Friday the 6th. Was nice to get a break from the scorching temps in mid-michigan. Arrived at Bewabic State Park on Friday. Thanks to Kingfisher for suggesting it, nice little campground.
Survived the lightning storm and nonstop rain from 10pm Friday till 4am Saturday morning and headed out to fish.

7/7 5:45am-2pm Lake Emily
Weeds mature throughout lake
Visibility 3-6 feet
Water temps 75-80

First time at this lake and really liked it. Pretty easy to figure it out started moving fish on topwater right away. When I say right away I mean as we were pushing off from the ramp. Landed a upper 20's fish on a saltwater spook at the launch. Worked our way around to where the creek is at the northernmost point of the lake and continued to move fish with the spook. Buddies had quite a few follows from mid to upper 30's fish on various bucktails as well. Worked our way around to the mid lake point as was suggested by Kingfisher and caught two fish on successive casts. Thanks Mike. Nice thirty hit and came unpinned right at the boat using a orange/chrome shallow raider. Very next cast caught a 36 on the same raider(that now isn't quite as chromey as before). Both fish taken at point in about 15 FOW over weedbed. Another follow in same spot from a mid 40's fish that looked to be very thick.

7/7 Emily 6pm-930pm
Temps Maxed out at 81

Hit same spots mentioned from morning. Didn't move as many fish. Buddy ended up landing 2 upper 20's on a perch colored Squirrly Jake, pretty fish. Decided to leave when one of the homeowners started firing off m80's or something over the lake, could see the fish at the surface scatter everytime one went off. All in all a very nice lake that I will definitely hit again. Was getting a liitle worried about the high temps as we still had a few more days to go. Weather was supposed to break and bottom out at the low 50's so things looked like they might be ok.

7/8 Wildcat Lake Vilas Co. WI 5am-2pm
Water Temp 76-79
Clarity 4-8

Headed to Wisky to try out a "numbers" lake. A pretty lake with a bunch of islands. Nice vast weed flats in 6-15 fow surrounded by some decent depths 25-35. Pulled out a mid 20's walleye on a Magnum Musky Killer and didn't see much else. Was pretty popular saw about 10 other boats out targeting Muskies. Headed over to Big Kitten Lake which is connected and caught a upper 30's fish over weeds in 18 fow on a black and white Shallow Raider. A few more follows on Dawgs and bucktails and we were off to our next lake.

Were up in the air on where to go to next and had checked out of the campground. Decided to figure it out over lunch/dinner at Black Oak Inn on HWY B. Great thin crust pizza, and a beautiful thick 50+ reproduction from the Cisco Chain on the wall. Decided that since we were so close we would try Thousand Island Lake on the chain.

7/8 430pm-9pm Thousand Island Lake

Probably a mistake to go here. Too much ground to cover in so little time. Didn't move any and arms were getting sore from casting so much. Started targeting smallies and were able to land a few. Nice lake would go back when I had more time.

Decided that we were going to try to hit Smokey in the morning and set off to find a hotel room in Iron River or Crystal Falls. No vacancies anywhere for some reason and while I am sitting in the back seat trying to find a place to stay my buddy hits the breaks hard and I look up just in time to see hair flying. Turns out we smoked a deer crossing the road on 2. Luckily for us, not the dee,r he caught it in a way that it went to the side when we hit it. No damage to the boat, the truck however will need a new grill and some fender work. It kind of put everybody, especially the driver who owned the truck in a sour mood. Had to go file a report in Crystal Falls at the sheriif office. Finished up with that a little after midnight. Decided to shorten up our trip home and start heading east. After a long boring drive where everybody in the truck were thinking mailboxes were deer we decided to stop outside of Marquette and planned on hitting McKeever in the morning.

7/9 6am-10pm McKeever Lake
Water Temp 75-78
Clarity very good

The low night time temps were doing a good job lowering the temps on the water. Had the whole lake to ourselves. Moved a few fish from Timber long shoreline and out of weeds in western side of lake. Lack of sleep night before didn't do us any favors and the lack of action had us unfortunatley tired and going through the motions. Decided we needed some action to get us out of our funk and headed for Newberry.

7-9 Dollarville Flooding
Water Temp 73-77
Clarity 2-4 stained water

Headed to familiar waters for some action. We usually hit up the Tahq 3 or 4 times a year for the past ten years so we know it well. Bucktails and my spook started moving fish right away in the upper stretch of the river. Temps in Mud Lake were 77 and the fish were active. They were blowing up on the Spook left and right but were avoiding getting pinned. Lots of upper 30's fish coming halfway out of the water after it. Buddy's manged to land a 32 and 36 on bucktails in the river section.

7-10 Dollarville 6am-2pm

Temps were about the same and it was a downright chilly ride up the river in the morning. It actually felt pretty good after the week of weather we had. Fish were very active again and blowing up topwater baits from 6 am -10am. Still had trouble hooking up though. Did manage to catch a 19 inch and a hefty 22in largemouth that came in just over 6 lbs out of Mud Lake and as usual lots of pretty scenery.

All in all a fun trip even though nothing spectacular. Realized that in the future will not try to cover as much new water in such a short time. I also realized that casting for 12+ hours a day for four days isn't as easy as it used to be. Thanks agian to everyone who offered up ideas and advice on my previous threads. Good Luck to everyone and be safe!

Glad to hear you had some action. Mceever is really a great little lake. Sounds like you guys were a little beat from all the deer excitement . If it were me and I were going up and we just might be in September It will be Kingston, Mceever, Emily and Smokey. Maybe Dana tossed in if we have time. Mike

Nice report and hefty bass. I made the same mistake on UP trips in the past attempting to fish more water than I should have (but on the other hand, there is only so much vacation time and you always want to get into as much as possible new water, just something about those new lakes) One thing is for sure next time I go up there its less driving, less drinking, more fishing 1 or 2 nice big lakes, and resting in between. Sh** I'm getting older and wiser……

W e always used to spend one day at each lake. We would get to Mceever at about 11:00 pm and just jump in the back of the van and sleep till daylight. Launch the boat have a couple breakfast bars and hot cup of cappacino and fish the lake for the entire day. We always had lunch and dinner on the boat. Then pull at dark and drive to the next lake. On many of them we slept right at the boat launch or we would go to the closest Federal forest campgrounds which are all self serve. 5 lakes in 5 days then head home. Mike

We seriously considered staying at a launch or two but didn't want to be left with a low battery for trolling motor.

Mike have you heard anything about the water levels at Kingston?

Great report. Thanks for sharing. Nice fatty largemouth too. That pic looks like you are in some dense fog.

I will be up there to fish McKeever and the Tahq July 26-30 and we are thinking about hitting Kingston one of our days up there so I'll report the water level if we end up making it up there.
