Conditions perfect on Tuesday with variable winds out of the south and nice chop. Water temps a balmy 76/77 Fished with Cooper and Tristan Smith on their wonderful 27 foot Sea Ray. We missed a few smaller fish and and lost one just short of the net before encountering a huge Musky on a Superman Slasher. My personal best fish at 53.5 inches long with a 20 inch girth. Coopers great Livewell worked like 10 to revive the big girl and she went back real easy.
Second day, Conditions started out perfect but the winds died and the lake went flat and the water temps climbed fast but the fish did not stop pounding Bucktails. I finally caught my first double ten Buck tail fish and many more as we went 13 for 19 . My second 50 inch fish of the week was a skinny 51 that fought like a tank. Michelle did not wait long however to take the big fish title away from me like she always seems to do ha ha ha . Her personal best also came on a big custom Bucktail with double 10 blades. The fish filled the 60 inch live well and measured out at 55 inches with a 20 inch girth. After pictures the fish went back into the live well where she did good righting herself and looked like she was ready to go. We stopped the Heatwave and slipped her back but she returned to the surface where she struggled to stay upright. Captain Craig circled back and netted her again and she went directly back into the airated water. Michelle then worked with her for half an hour and this time when she was ready Craig pulled all the boards and lines in and we all went for a swim with the fish. The good captain followed her as she swam away from him. It was something to see. I had to start his boat and follow them. Craig stayed in water until that big girl went back on her own power and stayed down for good. Its was awesome to see someone work so hard to save a big fish. We swam for half an hour and made sure she stayed down. Then we continued to troll the general area and were happy to see she stayed down. Michelle is still in shock over the size of this fish.
Day three , fished in our boat with Rick Wacasey aka known here as rick esox wrangler. Winds were calm in the morning and we decided to go right back the same spot where Craig had taken us for several reasons. One lots of fish there , two to see if our big girl stayed down. When we arrived water temps were already warm at 79 and the good news was No dead fish floating except for 1 huge Carp. We trolled the area for several hours before getting a nice 40 inch fish for Rick and a little 30 inch shaver for me. The little one went back hard and required live well work to return it. I decided it was too warm there and headed for the western end to look for cooler water. Just short of the Ruscom river we found temps were falling but a nasty front was coming from the west and decided to pull our boards in and run for it. Too late !! Right as we started to clear lines another 50 inch class fish Crushed a Slasher and took Michelle for a 200 yard ride as the winds whipped the boat up to 4 miles an hour. Rick and I struggled to get the boards in and managed to do so also dropping the sail like top we had up. with the boat slowed down and the other rods cleared Michelle got the fish in and it was a beautifull 49 inch Musky with a bigger girth than any of the other fish we had boated including her 55. However we had no time for pictures or girth measurements as I just used the stick and got her length and released her right there in the water. The waves were huge and we were all getting drenched with spray. I made the call to just get the fish unhooked and turn the boat before we were swamped. Rick tried to take a picture of the fish coming in with the lure but it didnt turn out very good. We got the stuffing beat out of us for two hours working our way back to calmer waters and then the storm blew itself out. Rick got a walleye off Grosse point after we got back to U.S. waters and we called it a day. We ended up going 3 for 6 all on Slashers. Im beat up sore and dont want to see another boat for at least a week.
In all we boated 17 fish in three days with 3 over 50 inches and three of those personal bests. Michelles last fish was bigger than 49 inches but I had no time to get a better measurement. It was probably 51 or 52 with a girth of maybe 22/23 . Rick just said it was friggin huge.
Special thanks go out to Cooper and Tristan Smith for being great hosts and great friends and putting me on a fish of a life time.. Rick for being there when we needed him. A 50 inch fish is coming your way!! Captain Craig Miller of Heatwave Charters , what can we say? he swims with Muskies. Anyone looking for a great charter on Lake St. Clair Craig gets the job done. The Heatwave is an awesome boat!!
It was the best three days we have ever had on the water. Lets do it again!!! 😀 Mike and Michelle
Wow! All I can say is that it was a great experience to be able to fish out there with you guys. There are many other things that can make a fishing trip fun other than catching fish. It was exiting, fun, and we caught fish! Thanks for taking me along. Also, that fish WAS huge! Good job Michelle! Sorry I couldnt get a better pic. Conditions made it difficult.
I should send a Letter to Starcraft and thank them for building my boat. Once again she pulled through and got us out of some real nasty weather.
We broke Rick in the right way and he performed all tasks of planer board trolling very well. We are off the water now for a good 8 days. Need to rest, and fix some broken tackle, make baits and repair some massive teeth marks. Mike
