Boaters asked to be aware of nets on Gun Lake (Barry County) as
part of fish survey

Gun Lake Netting Survey May 11-14 - look out for nets. - Warm Water Fishing Inland LP LakesThe Department of Natural Resourceshas scheduled a netting survey on Gun Lake in Barry County for Monday, May 11 through Thursday, May 14.

DNR fisheries crews will set several nets around Gun Lake that will be checkeddaily. Each net will be marked with orange “DNR” floats/buoys. Boaters shouldmaintain a safe distance from the nets to prevent entanglement. At night, there will be two boats equipped with lights electroshocking the shoreline.

“The purpose of this survey is to collect fish abundance and growth data tohelp inform decisions on future fisheries management of Gun Lake,” said JayWesley, acting Lake Michigan Basin coordinator for the DNR Fisheries Division.“We have been assessing Gun Lake to determine if Great Lakes muskellungerestoration efforts would be sensible, given the existing fishpopulation.”

The Gun Lake Protective Association and the DNR collaboratively stock springand fall fingerling walleye in the lake, which has created a popular fishery. The addition of another predator such as muskellunge will depend on currentpredator and prey ratios in the lake, with the goal to maintain a diverse andbalanced fishery.
