Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery-Heat kills!

Post by MuskyTom » Mon Jul 23, 2012 9:50 am

I was at the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Mattawan with my kids on Saturday and the show pond only had a few fish in it, a few muskies, some sturgeon and a couple trout. The DNR employee working inside said they lost about 2,000 trout and salmon due to the high heat and the weeds dying and using up the oxygen in the water. I was glad to see they didn't lose any muskies or sturgeon but I can see how stressing a muskie by catching it in these high water temps could really increase their chances of dying.

I also asked how the baby muskies are doing and I was told there are about 400,000 at about 2 to 3 inches long and are eating the tiny pellets. Obviously all of them won't make it to be planted but they are doing well.
