WI - Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery update

Post by Hamilton Reef » Wed Oct 19, 2005 10:31 pm

Yes this is a WI article, but it relates to our GLS program. After years of emails and phone conversations, I finally got a chance to meet Steve Fajfer in person while at the LM Salmon Conference in Kenosha WI last month. Of course we talked about the future of GLS program covering LSC, Georgian Bay, Green Bay, and future for helping our MDNR.

Note: An outlying rearing pond on DNR property, the White River Pond, is used to produce Fall yearling muskellunge for the Lake Michigan restoration project. Wild Rose is also the leader in development of using artificial diets for rearing northern pike and hybrid muskellunge in Wisconsin, and is the key hatchery in the restoration of the Great Lakes strain of muskellunge to upper Lake Michigan. They incubate sucker eggs to produce forage for their and other hatcheries musky programs. Source: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/fhp/wildrose/

Taxpayers: Go fish for funds
No tax money would pay for fish hatchery overhaul

WILD ROSE — A long-needed overhaul of the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery could begin as early as next year.

The estimated $24.3 million renovation of the century-old facility will come from a number of sources, including fishing licenses, the federal government’s Sport Fish Restoration grant program, Great Lakes salmon and trout stamp sales and the Natural Resources Damage Assessment Fund.
