Yes, released. Apparently the captain took a bunch of BS from other captains and fishermen because they released the fish.
It was the anglers first muskie. I just talked to him about Joe Fittante...

I am really impressed that it was released- Not many captains or anglers wold have put that back. I would have thought about it for sure... No one will give this guy the credit he deserves for a great catch.

When is it OK to keep a possible record muskie? Spend 95% of my time fishing alone. Maybe it's never the right thing to do. By the time I flag another boat down, or let it bang around on the bottom of the boat it's as good as dead! What would you do if you landed a 58", or a 60" + muskie? There are a few Michigan lakes that have that potential.
Just looking for some thoughts.

Fair question, thats what I was alluding to when I said I would have to think about it. For me it would boil down to whether or not I wanted the validation of the record. That fish was not heavy enough to tempt me, if she were thick I may have had a decision to make. If the fish is 42 and you want to keep it you should be able to with no guilt whatsoever from anyone.

I have ALWAYS said:If its legal,do what ya want.I let em all go but thats
my choice. If a person takes a legal fish I think "that kinda sucks" but
Im cool with it.Its the sub-legal stories that tick me off!!!
The only way I keep ANY legal fish (even if it were a pig) was if she
couldnt recover, and went belly up.Then Id have to figure out how to get
it home??Leave it in the boat, throw it in the trunk??What a smelly, slimy mess!!
